Title: Dommage que ce ne soit plus avec Kate Beckinsale.
Review: Ce 3ème épisode de la saga Underworld marque un tournant avec l’arrivée du personnage joué par Rhona Mitra.Plus de Kate Beckinsale donc et c’est bien dommage car elle incarnait à merveille la sublime et mortelle Selene.Ce 3ème opus est inférieur aux 2 autres mais c’est plus par cause d’essoufflement de la franchise que par baisse de la qualité générale.Les ingrédients qui ont fait le succès des 2ers films sont toujours là mais on sent un peu que les scénaristes ont manqué d’idées pour donner un souffle épique à cet épisode.Ce Underworld 3 n’est pas du tout indigne des 2 autres épisodes et je je le recommande sans hésiter à tous les fans de fantastique.

Review: In the run up to watching Underworld: Blood Wars (which now seems to probably be the last film in this franchise as we know it, with Kate Beckinsdale recently saying she won’t be returning for any future films) I decided to re-watch all the previous films. I really enjoyed the first two Underworld films – the action, the dark but slick sets and cinematography and the all important realisation of how the vampires and werewolves appeared on screen – but this third film, which is a prequel to the first two, has something about it for me which adds extra depth to the world and feels more complete and involved. This is probably helped by the setting – being predominantly set much further back when Victor was younger and his daughter was still alive, it has more of a gothic feel about it, like a very dark fairytale with the castles and oldy-worldy settings draped in fog and without the glare of modern technology or big bright cities. It feels much more magical and mythical and picks up extra charm, all be it a very dark and gory charm. The fact the characters and their histories are already partly developed in the earlier films also adds to this as it makes the world feel much richer and it’s nice seeing the characters you know as they were many moons ago and how they’ve evolved through the ages into the modern world.The lycans at this stage were mostly slaves of the vampires who wore restrictive collars which prevented them from transforming at will and the vampires used them to build their strongholds, amongst other things, so we see lots of each in much higher numbers than other films and they look great on the big screen – especially during fight sequences with lots of gore and action. The film hasn’t aged badly at all and the effects all still look pretty good. The story of Victor’s daughter and what happened to her, and in turn how this led to Selene being taken in by Victor all works really well and I think it’s definitely one of the better prequels out there and a great addition to the franchise.

Review: When this movie came out, I didn’t think I would enjoy it. I’m not really a « prequel » fan because you kind of know how it’s going to turn out in the end (like, « Why watch Titanic, the ship hits an iceberg and sinks! »). However I was entertained by the history of the events as they unfolded and found myself wanting to go back and watch the previous movies again, having been given a little more insight into the reasons for the war between the species. And btw, I loved Titanic as well 🙂
