Title: Un film culte !
Review: Paperhouse (1988) vaut le détour pour les amateurs de fantastique et d’onirisme. L’interprétation de la jeune Charlotte Burke, pour laquelle ce fut le seul et unique rôle, est remarquable de justesse. Et quel tempérament !J’avais loupé ce film lors de sa sortie et salle, j’ai enfin pu le voir grâce à cette édition Blu-Ray de bonne facture. Bernard Rose dont c’était le premier long métrage, réalisera ensuite le mémorable Candyman. Ce film est à ranger aux côtés de l’échelle de Jacob (1991) d’Adrian Lyne, ovni fantastique s’il en est pour son histoire et l’atmosphère malsaine qui s’en dégage, et de la Compagnie des Loups (1985) de Neil Jordan, pour ses aspects oniriques très marqués.

Title: Une bonne surprise
Review: Quelle bonne surprise que ce film passé largement inaperçu à sa sortie! Tourné pour un budget modeste, et bénéficiant par conséquent d’effets spéciaux minimaux, il en tire le meilleur parti: nous entrons dans un monde imaginaire, dont les frontières avec la réalité sont bien nettes, et l’art du scénariste nous convainc que nous pourrions bien ne pas en ressortir indemnes: il suffirait d’un faux pas… La jeune actrice est remarquable dans ce rôle de petite fille qui doit apprendre, pas à pas, à force d’essais et d’erreurs, à maîtriser sa colère, ses frustrations et ses désirs.

Review: avec candyman, le chef d’oeuvre de Bernard ROSE dont j’attendais mieux dans ses films suivants…une fiction fantastique stricte, on pense beaucoup aux histoires que l’ on nous racontait quand nous étions petits et qui nous faisaient si peur. le réquiem de FAURE est un atout non négligeable et on se laisse entrainer par les rêves fantasques de cette jeune gamine avec délectation…MAIS POURQUOI AUTANT DE TEMPS POUR SORTIR CE FILM EN DVD? mystère!

Title: un reve eveillé…
Review: tres bon film de bernard rose (candyman)…peut-etre moins connu mais qui merite fortement de l’etre. un recit sensible, emouvant et poetique mais aussi terrifiant! la grande force du metrage vient, en partie, du soin apporté au visuel et de la constuction du recit. un film qui se demarque des grosses productions et qui merite amplement son etiquette de film « culte »!!!

Title: Une édition qui elle aussi s’apparente à un rêve
Review: Je ne noterai pas le film en lui-même, que j’ai trouvé très beau mais dont l’appréciation variera grandement d’un spectateur à l’autre. Seulement le contenant : un Blu-Ray de très belle facture. L’image est splendide, avec de magnifiques contrastes et d’une grande propreté tout en étant naturelle. Le son fait ce qu’il peut (éviter la VF à tout prix) mais reste très correct. Les suppléments, tous sous-titrés, sont particulièrement intéressants et honnêtes.Même au prix fort, je ne regrette aucunement mon achat. Bien joué Metropolitan !

Review: Un OVNI du cinéma britannique, dont l’atmosphère n’est pas sans rappeler certains films de Peter JACKSON (Créatures célestes & Lovely bones). Riche en rebondissement, ce film onirique ne pourra en aucune façon vous laisser indifférent. Méconnu, il gagnerait à sortir de l’ombre. Un classique de l’étrange…!

Review: I was totally unaware of this film, an intriguing and absorbing British psychological horror fantasy from the late 1980s, until I read a review of the 2015 film AfterDeath, where the writer made reference to the strong influence of the previous movie. After renting and watching the movie I can fully appreciate this influence, but unlike AfterDeath the earlier film is definitely more psychological than horror although there are certainly some horrific moments in the last 20 minutes. The narrative centres on Anna Madden, the 11 year old daughter and only child of a well-educated couple who appear to have separated. Anna, a troubled and headstrong girl is struck down with glandular fever and bouts of fainting, and while unconscious or sleeping finds herself in an alternative world of her own creation. The world is extremely limited and consists of a house located on a stark, sparse plain, a boy (whom she has never met previously) and a grotesque version of her absent father – all brought into existence through Anna’s sketch book drawings. The majority of the film alternates between Anna’s sickroom and her alternate world, the latter a tremendous surreal feast on the eyes. In addition to the striking visuals the soundtrack is also effective in conveying the darkness and strangeness of what we are observing, in particular the inclusion of excerpts from Faure’s Requiem. The performances are wonderfully understated, the main adult actors being Ben Cross, Gemma Jones and Glenne Headly while the two lead child actors admirably depict a confused sadness, reflecting the overall tone of the movie. Although the film’s ambiguity and lack of rationality might frustrate some, I embraced the challenge of interpreting the narrative within my own universe, speculating on the underlying themes and enjoying this quietly bizarre movie. Not your typical cinema fare by any means and it probably won’t appeal to everybody, but I really, really liked it.

Review: I saw this movie as a kid and was so excited to see that it was available on dvd- however it does not work in certain regions. I am in America and it did not work for me.Upon reading some of these reviews I have to say that some of you didn’t pay enough attention. It is like a trippy fever dream yes! Good description! Anna starts having fainting spells and fever and is in and out of consciousness. In these fits she enters a dream world that seems to be kind of an alternate reality where she enters a world she drew. She meets Mark yes, and someone in their review was confused as to whether or not Mark was also experiencing this cosmic meeting and to that I say watch the doctors reaction when Anna tells her things she couldn’t possibly know and the note she finds at the lighthouse. Look behind her head above the bed in hospital at the drawing – not hers but I’m assuming must be Marks.I wish I could discuss this movie w someone who has actually seen it and noticed these things. It’s such a strange and cool movie. I was obsessed w it as a kid and looked forward to showing to my own but it would not play and I have to return it.

Review: Directed by Bernard Rose (who’d make Candyman next, and made many 80s music videos, including FGTH’s banned Relax!), coproduced by Working Title (who’d go on to make all the famous British romcoms – Four Weddings, etc), scored by a pre-Hollywood Hans Zimmer in his magically orchestral and emotional style (very similar to his work on The Fruit Machine) and with great performances by the two child leads, Paperhouse is a one-of-a-kind dark children’s fantasy.It’s like a more surreal version of The Witches and less trite version of The Lady in White, which all came out around the same time in the late 80s/early 90s.It’s based on the popular children’s book Marianne Dreams (which was previously made into a B&W TV series I couldn’t get into) and to say much more would be to spoil it. The trailer is very good, and doesn’t give anything away while giving a true taste of what it’s like.It’s a shame that it wasn’t better known, but it definitely has a loyal following and nearly everyone who revisits or rediscovers it seems to love it.Very British, and if you’re an 80s/90s child, much of it will probably feel familiar. Another film which treads almost similar – but darker – ground is the little known Afraid of the Dark (1991).Paperhouse is the kind of film which used to come on late night British TV but sadly doesn’t anymore. Intriguing, fast paced and ultimately heartbreaking – it’s a testament to the talent of all involved.The HD version on Amazon looks fantastic but the DVDs aren’t very good quality. Will we ever see a Blu-ray?
