Title: une formidable évocation des tous débuts du cinéma jusqu’en 1915
Review: Trois ans après le formidable « La barbe à papa » (1973) le réalisateur Peter Bogdanovich réunit une nouvelle fois Ryan O’Neal et sa fille Tatum pour évoquer avec un immense talent les débuts du cinéma de 1900 à 1915.Le réalisateur souhaitait tourner son film en noir et blanc, les producteurs de leur côté exigèrent une sortie en couleurs, ce qui fût fait en 1976. Quelques années plus tard Peter Bogdanovich parvint à faire projeter son film en noir et blanc (les deux versions nous sont proposées dans ce très beau coffret DVD+Blu-ray).Pour ma part je préfère et de loin la version en noir et blanc, Peter Bogdanovich nous plongeant littéralement dans l’atmosphère des débuts du cinéma, enchaînant gags et situations propres au cinéma muet. C’est avec un plaisir évident que tous les interprètes jouent le jeu d’autant plus que rien n’a été laissé au hasard qu’il s’agisse des situations, des dialogues, des accessoires et des difficultés liées au tournage des tous premiers films (tout restait à créer: le métier de metteur en scène, celui de caméraman et celui d’acteur et d’actrice de cinéma) et à leur distribution dans de petites salles (les « Nickelodéon ») avec un public non trié sur le volet et la guerre entre les « distributeurs » indépendants. Le film se termine par la première en 1915 de « Naissance d’une Nation » de Griffith qui marque les réels débuts du cinéma tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui.Ryan O’Neal, Tatum O’Nneal, Burt Reynolds, Brian Keith (Peter Bogdanovich aurait voulu que ce soit Orson Wells qui tînt son rôle mais cela s’avéra impossible), Stella Stevens, John Ritter sont épatants.Un grand moment de cinéma pour un film majeur sur le cinéma dans le cinéma qui mérite vraiment d’être découvert.

Title: LE BONHEUR DE FAIRE DU CINEMA (ET d’Y ALLER)
Review: Même si ça ne semble pas être le film préféré de Bogdanich on aurait tort de bouder son plaisir.Le film dégage un tel bonheur de faire du cinéma, d’une liberté de jeu des acteurs qu’elle est communicative à la salle.On rit beaucoup, même si on se dit parfois que c’est un peu foutraque et que tout part en roue libre. Mais au moment où on pourrait lâcher, Bogdanovich nous balance un gag très pointu qui montre qu’il maîtrise parfaitement son film.On pourra y lire aussi une lecture entre le cinéma des studios et le Nouvel Hollywood (auquel pourtant Bodganovich ne s’est jamais identifié), faire du cinéma pour plaire ou faire le cinéma qu’on a envie de faire.En tous cas, le cinéma y est montré et veut et reçu comme une chose nécessaire et vivante. Belle leçon !

Review: « Nickelodeon » is a marvelous, underrated tribute to early silent comedies. Set in the years 1913-1915, it follows the fast-paced, anarchic style of the early Keystone (Mack Sennett) comedies of the time. Cartoonish physical comedy and sight gags abound. Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton actually entered movies during the years 1913-1918, and several of the images evoke their visual style. Although the film is not speeded up, the pacing is very brisk, suggesting the breakneck pace of that early, ruthless style of comedy.It may surprise some that « Nickelodeon » is not shot in black and white, not it is a silent picture. However, it takes advantage of color and sound with attractive visuals and a delightful use of contrapuntal dialogue and music. Pay close attention to the songs that the harmonica player supplies on-the-spot. The pace settles down somewhat toward the end, but so did the movies (a la D W Griffith) at that point. »Nickelodeon » was not critically appreciated when it was released in 1976, probably because the very early silent comedies were not as widely available as they are now. Modern DVDs have enabled the studious (or enthusiastic) film comedy historian to become much more familiar with (an appreciative of) the relentless comedy style of the 19-teens.This is knockabout comedy at its best.

Review: A few years ago I saw this movie with the director himself in the theatre ~ Peter Bogdanovitch. He brought with him his original or director’s cut of Nickelodeon. There were perhaps another 3 or 4 minutes of footage and the film itself was shown completely in glorious black and white. He said the studio forced him to alter his vision and told him to use a studio honcho’s girlfriend – Jane Hitchcock in the leading role (instead of Cybil Shepherd) Peter said much of the screen story was from the life of C.B. DeMille and other early pioneers.

Review: I remembered ordering it, when I got it. It was scratched and returned it and got my money back. So I didn’t re-ordered it. I don’t know how the film is!
