Éric Rohmer enjoyed a remarkable career. Between 1949, when he started work on his first short film, to the release of his final effort, The Romance of Astrea and Celadon, in 2007, Rohmer directed some 28 features, as well as numerous shorts and documentaries, many of them masterpieces.
The Comedies and Proverbs series brings together six of the Éric Rohmer’s best; the first entry in the series, The Aviator’s Wife, sees François become obsessed with the idea that his Girlfriend is being unfaithful. A Good Marriage follows Sabine in her pursuit of matrimony with Edmond, who it seems is the only person that doesn’t know the two are set to marry. In Pauline at the Beach the titular Pauline and her cousin Marion discover lovers new and old during a summer vacation. Full Moon in Paris centres on Louise who although in a relationship with Remi seeks the freedom of single life. The Green Ray sees Delphine let down by her holiday companion, travelling alone she witnesses a remarkable natural phenomenon. The sixth and final tale in the series, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, tells the story of new-to-town Blanche and her colleague Léa whose relationships become entangled.
Complemented by numerous bonus features, this special edition Blu-ray set provides both a welcome opportunity for the newcomer to explore the work of a great director as well as a must-have collection for the die-hard Rohmer fan.

Review: Wonderful restoration and transfer in 1080p of these brilliant masterpieces. What a unique style Rohmer has in telling stories like no Hollywood movie could ever do no matter how much they try. If you are new to Eric Rohmer, then you have definitely missed out in the World of Cinema. There is a depth and charm that runs deep in every film he makes. They are genuine works of Art that have a unique signature stamped with style. Please look elsewhere for mindless action movies… these are works of art that contain no action whatsoever… they do however convey the human condition and the human longing for companionship and the wish to be desired. I can’t tell you what the message is in one sentence, because the message runs deep. But I do know that the dynamics and complexities between the characters are very real, accurate and well portrayed. Fascinating cinema. Not to be missed if you’re a thinker.

Review: If you want Eric Rohmer’s Comedies and Proverbs in the US, this might be the best choice. I threw out a different Comedies and Proverbs collection I bought earlier due to poor picture quality. You must have a PAL/NTSC player to watch these.

Review: I agree with Tony Rawlinson’s assessment that 4 movies are in great HD video. But Aviator’s Wife is significantly ‘grained’, particularly in the first few minutes, after which it improves. But The Green Ray is really badly grained, having been remastered from 16 mm source, as it says in the beginning of the movie.Still, for Rohmer’s insights into human interaction, sexual dynamics, self-delusion (A Good Marriage)…. these are essential for film afficionados. Pauline a la Plage was and is a repeat watching experience.

Review: I have tremendous affection for these films, and have given the discs a quick viewing, and all appears superlative with the quality of the discs themselves. However, there is an important caveat to this. What became apparent immediately when I opened this package was the roughshod manner in which the set of discs was presented. – The plastic cases that contain these discs, are very weak, and fell apart as I opened my package when I received it today (please see pictures for the cracks and associated damage that was evident on the cases when opening). The box within which the three cases with six discs are stored is also insubstantial and flimsy. This does not correspond with the box portrayed in the pictures which accompany Amazon’s listing of the product, which appears a lot broader and more sturdy than what I actually received. This appears to be a more cheaply assembled package , which I find less than adequate, and one which I will be returning, as these films deserve something a lot less shoddy. A highly disappointing purchase.
