Dans une prison en Louisiane, se retrouvent un petit proxénète et un DJ. Ils sont rejoints par un Italien débrouillard qui les aide à s’évader… Caméra d’or au Festival de Cannes 1984 avec Stranger Than Paradise, Jim Jarmusch s’impose avec Down By Law. Roberto Benigni (La vie est belle) apporte une note d’humour et de drôlerie à cette oeuvre filmée en longs plans-séquences, tandis que le musicien Tom Waits tient là son premier grand rôle au cinéma. Malgré un beau noir et blanc contrasté et un son mono correct, la copie du film proposée par ce DVD n’est pas exempte d’imperfections et présente des images pixelisées à quelques reprises. La sélection de cinq affiches enrichit un tant soit peu la partie suppléments, par ailleurs pourvue des filmographies déroulantes de John Lurie, Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni, N. Title: Mythe, mythes, miteux ?
Review: Jim Jarmush à la baguette. Noir et blanc.Jack, Zack.Tom Waits en désabusé rocailleux.John Lurie, impatient en manque.Une prison improbable au cœur de la Louisiane.Roberto, le chien fou qui entre dans le jeu de quilles…Une évasion complètement anachronique… C’est l’histoire, toute l’histoire…Et pourtant ce road movie est captivant et loufoque tout à la fois.Tom Waits est excellent et égraine le film de sa voix, cette voix faite de rencontre d’un verre de bourbon avec un cigare dans le vent d’un ventilateur. John Lurie lui donne une réplique parfaite.Roberto Benigni est comme à son habitude insipide et insupportable, à la scène comme à la ville, il se prétend.Jarmush à su mettre en avant ce trait de caractère particulier seul atout de ce soit disant acteur comme pivot pour les deux autres personnages.Autant T. Waits est dans la sensualité et le feeling, autant R. Benigni est cabot et ringard.Malgré ce bémol, le film est excellent (si on arrive à occulter l’aversion que provoque Benigni) et les décors poisseux choisis sont à l’avenant…

Title: I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream ….
Review: Chef d’oeuvre de Jim Jarmush découvert en salle, il y a longtemps & que je ne me lasse pas de revoir, ni d’offrir …Avec un ébouriffant trio d’acteurs : John Lurie (leader & saxophoniste des Lounge-Lizards, groupe que je vous recommande si vous ne connaissez pas …), Roberto Begnigni (alors encore méconnu) & Tom Waits (Mister Tom Waits, quoi !), le réalisateur signait là un de ses classiques. Un scénario simple, qui lui permet d’explorer l’Image et de développer les rapports entre les personnages.Une ambiance & une musique qui envoutent à jamais …Merci Monsieur Jarmush !!

Title: joli & rigolo
Review: Moins sombre que « Dead Man » , mais toujours cette superbe mise en scène que le noir& blanc valorise encore. « Down by Law » est une sorte de conte, servie par trois interprètes dont le plus attachant et le plus inoubliable est nettement Benigni, qui se promène là comme un ange hilarant . Bien sûr le film est à voir en V.O. pour ne rien manquer de l’ambiance & des relations entre ces trois hurluberlus. Un chouette moment de cinéma, vraiment.

Review: 1984年に、画期的なスタイルで世界中にブームを巻き起こした「ストレンジャー・ザン・パラダイス」の２年後の作品。「ストレンジャー・ザン・パラダイス」はハリウッドの主流のドッカンドッカン爆発するようなシーンも、サスペンスも何もないゆる～いロードムービーで、「こんなんで映画になるんだ。」と、たぶんアメリカ人はびっくりしたと思います。それに比べれば、この映画はもう少しストーリーがあります。初期のジャームッシュはモノクロ作品ゆえに資金集めにも苦労したようで、「カラーならいくらでもお金を出すのに・・・」と言われたそうです。でもこの作品は、モノクロだからこそより一層素晴らしいのです。買う人は当時のファンが多いかと思われますが、インターネット時代で人と人との直接の触れ合いが減った現代だからこそ、今の時代でもウケる映画なのではないかなと思います。特にジャームッシュ初心者には、モノクロ作品の中では一番観やすい作品なのでお勧めです。主役の３人がそれぞれしっかりキャラ立ちしていますが、それもそのはずで、通常の映画は脚本を書いてオーディションをして俳優を選びますが、この映画は、出演してほしい俳優を先に選んで、その人に合わせて脚本を書いているので、役にピッタリなのは当然なのです。オープニングのトム・ウェイツのナンバーのカッコよさと、画像の素晴らしさに、あっという間に映画の世界に引き込まれました。公開当時映画館で観て、その時も面白くてしょうがありませんでしたが、最近になって観直すと、主役の３人の中で、ロベルト・ベニーニが際立って素晴らしいなと感じます。ジャームッシュはもともと詩人を目指していたこともあり、言葉には大変なこだわりがあって、「言葉が通じない可笑しさ」を表現することがものすごく上手です。そういう意味で、ロベルト・ベニーニがおいしいところを持っていってしまったのでしょうね。「タイタニック」の主役のオファーを断って「デッドマン」に出演したジョニー・デップといい、この映画の人たちといい、ギャラは安くても面白い映画を作りたいという映画愛に満ちた作品で、素晴らしいです。

Review: Wonderful movie, three great characters, thoroughly entertaining. Tom Waits & John Lurie play Zack & Jack, sour, trapped losers, carrying the movie ably but not really taking it anywhere, except into a New Orleans jail cell. With the arrival of Bob, played by Roberta Benigni, the movie lifts off. Up until Bob is put in the cell, Down By Law is hardly what anyone could call a comedy; with him, DBL escapes (literally) the confines of the fate of Zack & Jack, going, like them, nowhere. Benigni, at times, froths things up to absurdity, the rest of the time displaying solid, comedic chops, while, throughout, displaying a wonderful humanity. Highly recommended, in glorious black & white, with a terrific soundtrack

Review: Als Filmmusiker der ich bin, brauch ich natuerlich eine Library mit den Grossen, und Robby Muellers Kamera- und Licht-Klima macht Down-By-Law zu einer der wichtigsten « Indie »-Juwelen, auch wegen der genialen Kombination von Schauspielern: Aufgrund der Freundschaften zwischen Reg. Jarmusch und Waits, Lurie, Begnini, musste er nur noch ein geeignetes « Setup » / Rahmen darum legen, und das Ding lief fast von alleine… Der Film mag von den meisten Mainstreamern nach heutigen Seegewohnheiten als « langweilig » angesehen werden, kann ich aber nicht nachvollziehen, weil Stimmung und Setup sehr magisch sind und man stets schmunzelnd dabei ist. Aber mein absoluter Favorit of all times ist ja auch « A Serious Man » der Coens, was die meisten Menschen ebenfalls nicht nachvollziehen koennen. Wenn ich Verurteilung nicht so hassen wuerde, wuerde ich sagen, dass viele Menschen nicht mehr richtig zuhoeren koennen, aber ok, nennen wirs « Geschmacksfrage ». Fuer « Cineasten » ist der Film absolut ein Muss und KANN nicht enttaeuschen. Und dann wirklich sehr sympathisch ist das ungewoehnliche Making-Of in Form von drei langen Telefonaten Jarmuschs in 2005 also nach ueber 30 Jahren mit seinen Schauspielern, die viel ueber ihr Verhaeltnis untereinander und die damalige Arbeit vermitteln.

Review: Both these films are what many would describe as cult classics. Jarmusch entertains us with what are essentially some of the best celluloid that has come out of the US in the last twenty years.Although his following is growing and vocal, Jarmusch is not mainstream; which is exactly the way is should be. His films are brilliant for their refusal to adhere to any normal film conventions. They aren’t deep philosophical, proud films, yet they capture the normal facets and touches of modern day life that make them so charming. They focus on those special, small, unspectacular moments in life that we normally dismiss and never ponder on. These moments make us laugh, cry, grumble and sigh without any great effort.Jarmusch forces us to acknowledge the forgotten elements of our lives that bind and constitute human existence without poncy, condescending monologues. The story is never full of twists or unexpected changes, for Jarmusch his characters are the story, like us – we have the power to form our destiny and future. Full credit to Jarmusch for staying belligent and uncompromising in his approach, he never accepts funds with ‘strings attached’ – and it shows, for his films are unparalleled for their charming naturalism. So many of his counterparts prefer to descend the route of pessimism and ultimately misanthropism; which I personally find unoriginal and cheap. Jarmusch is realistic, yet never dark and downcast in his approach. Its not easy to be positive without being superficial, these films being a great testament to Jarmusch’s skill at creating realistic, not always likeable, but still amusing and interesting characters and situations.Be happy and glad. Life is good. Go buy these films now.
