Title: Des éléments intéressants, mais le coté baclé est préjudiciable
Review: Humphrey Bogart revient au Japon après la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans le bar qu’il a animé. Il y retrouve sa femme remariée. Ainsi que des mafieux japonais qui essaient de profiter de ses talents de pilote pour faire revenir au Japon des criminels de guerre.Des documents d’archives tournés au Japon avec une doublure d’Humphrey Bogard nous font croire que cela a été tourné au Japon. Et les cascades avec son personnage sont mal doublés: on voit bien le cascadeur et que ce n’est pas Humphrey Bogard qui tourne et qui fait les prises de judos. Ces défauts techniques dénotent soit d’un manque de précision du réalisateur, soit d’un manque de moyen de la production (le film est produit par la société d’Humphrey Bogard). Probablement les deux.Au final le film garde certaines qualités: comme cette histoire qui parle de l’immédiat après guerre au Japon, sujet rarement abordé. Où Humphrey Bogart l’Étatsunien a fraternisé avec un japonais et communique avec lui en se faisant des prises judo. Ceci est peu commun dans les films étatsuniens. L’amoureuse, Florence Marly, actrice française visiblement, est un peu fade, même si elle a un beau physique.Le film n’est pas renversant, mais reste une curiosité.

Review: Un petit bijou qui lorgne du côté de « Casablanca », sans y parvenir complètement, mais à (re)découvrir d’urgence.Le transfert HD est de bonne facture, mais comme trop souvent chez Sidonis, la copie laisse à désirer : ici, des explosions ponctuelles de points blancs qui peuvent être occasionnellement gênants – d’où une note de 4 et pas 5.

Review: This movie, for me, is more personal than anything else. I was stationed in Japan for approximately 4 years, spoke Japanese BEFORE I got there, though I greatly improved, more-‘N- MORE, while there, …AND I got to know some « Ins-‘N-Outs » of Japanese underground society that the tourist books, and the sleazy U.S. services guys who frequented the brothels…, etc, did NOT cover (i,e, a Japanese Oyabun (gang-boss) of the Yakuza was extremely impressed to be able to talk to a Black-American in Japanese). So I know especially what this movie said.

Review: Before I bought this DVD I never heard of Palladium, the company that released this DVD. Unlike some other smaller companies, Palladium offers a movie in superb quality. Only a pity there are no subtitles. But that wouldn’t hold me from buying more of their releases.About the movie: « Tokyo Joe » is a nice film, which I could watch again in a few years time. It’s not a « Maltese falcon » or « Big sleep », but nevertheless a very watchable movie. If you haven’t seen it, you’ll have an entertaining one-and-a-half hour with this if you should buy it.
