Review: J’ai reçu de nbenedetti la version longue, 148 mn, avec des passages en anglais sous-titrés. Cette version est particulièrement intéressante, nous avons tous vu la version cinéma, et celle-ci apporte un plus de compréhension et de dialogues. Le son français est un excellent DTS HD Master monophonique. Au début uniquement desservi par l’enceinte centrale, j’ai opté sur mon ampli pour un full stéréo. J’ai immédiatement constaté une nette amélioration de l’ambiance sonore et une très bonne répartition sur l’ensemble des canaux, d’où un étonnement certain, mono au départ. L’image est sublime de qualité, les tons de lever et de couché de soleil dans cette région aride de l’Amérique sont parfaitement rendus et font figure de référence photographique. On se laisse allé à l’admiration des cadrages, du grand art.Description technique, j’en conviens, mais l’histoire tout le monde la connait et peut l’apprécier au travers des autres commentaires. Juste une tranche de vie, bien concrète dans un coin perdu, pourtant pas si isolé que ça. Les caractères, les attitudes de nos congénères humains rejaillissent immanquablement, une oeuvre sociologique admirable.

Review: Quelle déception…… ! J’ai commandé ce dvd, car j’avais adoré le film : Mais la qualité de l’image est déplorable ; couleurs horribles………..il y a même des scènes où on ne distingue rien…. c’est bien la première fois, que je regrette mon achat. Bon, certes, le prix n’était pas élevé…(quoique, pour l’âge du film…), mais là, je déconseille fortement cet achat. Peut-être, suis-je tombé sur un lot défectueux ?Malgré cela, encore une fois, rien à dire sur l’emballage (parfait) et le délai de livraison (impec).

Review: A German lady tourist is abandoned by her husband on the roadside in the California desert. She walks along Route 66 until she encounters the Bagdad Cafe. Her mild, persistent manner, a penchant for cleaning and a new found practice of magic transforms this off-the-Interstate formerly dysfunctional cafe into the place to visit.I visited the cafe in 2013 (the only movie location I ever have sought out), found the parking lot full of cars and tour buses and the cafe full of patrons. Since you have to search for the cafe, It seems the movie still resonates with people.My DVD (only) copy of this 1987 movie replaced my VCR version. ‘Play Movie’ is all you get. There are no extras. The color and sound is good.

Review: Marianne Sagebrecht was a big star for a short time, thanks to this film and Rosalie Goes Shopping, also directed by Percy Adlon, and a previous one called Sugarbaby made in German and therefore less widely seen. She has a remarkable personal charm that is really at the centre of this amiable film, although all the performances are very good. The problem with this kind of material, which is basically « feel-good’ but dressed up with more arty credentials, is how to avoid its sweetness becoming all too much. This is probably what led Adlon to make the opening part so long. Two women, both splitting from husbands acrimoniously, find themselves in the same space in the desert truck-stop and motel, where the German Jasmin feels miserable and feisty Brenda becomes all but unbearable. CCH Pounder does well in this role, but there is a lot of shouting from her in the earlier part of the film, which sets up a jarring note. This grounds the film in a certain emotional realism, as she has the failing cafe to cope with alone, plus two teenage children and the baby of one of these. Adlon counts on the magic arriving and lifting the viewer, like the characters, as if suddenly caught in the middle of a double rainbow. And it really does work, so that by the end, the magic show is totally joyous. The attention to colour and texture in the shots is consistently magical and plays up the fairy-tale element of the film. Jack Palance is pretty amazing too – what a face, what ageless charm and vitality he brings to an admittedly slim role. In the end, though, it is Sagebrecht’s unique appeal that is perhaps most memorable, offset by a number of performances that are ultimately irresistible, and a marvellous open-hearted sense of a political message in there somewhere that never becomes too concrete or heavy.

Jasmin zahlt mit Travellerschecks und darf bleiben.Brenda lebt im Café mit ihrer halbwüchsigen Tochter Phyllis, ihrem erwachsenen Sohn Salomo , die kurz zuvor ihren nichtsnutzigen Mann nach einem Streit hinausgeworfen hat.Als Phyllis im Zimmer Rasierzeug und eine Lederhose entdeckt, liegen Brendas Nerven blank: Sie ruft den Sheriff, der bei Jasmins Ausweis kontrolliert und nichts Verdächtiges finden kann.Als Jasmin sich im Café nützlich macht, indem sie aufräumt, putzt und sich um Brendas Familie kümmert, wirft Brenda sie wegen dieser Einmischung in ihr Privatleben fast hinaus. Andererseits bemerkt sie Jasmins Fähigkeit, Menschen zu ermutigen und Freude zu verbreiten, und erkennt, dass es Jasmin nur darum geht, sich nach den Demütigungen durch ihren Mann wieder wertvoll und nützlich zu fühlen. Langsam wächst eine Freundschaft zwischen den beiden ungleichen Frauen.Jasmin hat im Gepäck ihres Mannes Anleitungen für Zaubertricks gefunden, beginnt zu üben und wächst eine Zaubershow, die sich schnell unter den Truckern herumspricht. Das Café ist nun immer voll.
