Review: Ron Howard met en scène ce charmant récit écrit sous la plus de George Lucas.Il peut être facile de lui trouver des défauts 35 ans plus tard mais ce fût une réalisation de haute volée en son temps.Certains effets visuels restent bluffant et le réalisateur jongle avec ses personnages pour une histoire contrastée et divertissante.

Review: I ordered the 2-Disc combo (UHD 4K+Bluray), and when it arrived all looked fine at first. But when I opened the sealed article, ther was only one disc inside – the Bluray! There was no empty holder for a missing second Disc or so, it just looked like an one-disc version. How can that be? The first thing that came to my mind was « fraud » -sorry, I couldn’t help it! This must have been some false packing by the manufacturer. So I had to send it back. The one star is therefor not for the movie, it’s because of the circumstances.

Review: « Willow » ist mit « Legende », « Der Tag des Falken », « Die Braut des Prinzen », « Die unendliche Geschichte » oder « Das dunkle Labyrinth » einer der Kult-Fantasystreifen der Achtziger. Auf Blu-Ray sieht der Film absolut fantastisch aus, nur selten wirkt manch ein Effekt, wie etwa das zweiköpfige Drachen-Monster am Ende, etwas veraltet, aber immer noch charmant. Auch in Sachen Sound hat man hier ganze Arbeit geleistet, die dts-Tonspur ist überraschend kräftig und verfügt über einen großen Dynamikumfang. Kurz gesagt: Wer « Willow » noch nicht gesehen hat, dem bietet sich mit dieser tollen Blu-Ray die beste Gelegenheit eine wunderbare Entdeckung zu machen. Der Film bietet eine klassische Gut-gegen-Böse-Heldengeschichte, eine böse Hexe, Monster, viel Herz und Humor, aber auch einiges an Action.Dank weltweiter, teils atemberaubend schöner Drehorte wie Wales und Neuseeland ist « Willow » ein immer noch wahnsinnig bildgewaltiger Film. Hier ist natürlich auch das enorm aufwändige und eindrucksvolle Setdesign, das durch fotorealistische Matte Paintings (also gemalte Hintergründe) erweitert wird. Auf Blu-Ray wird hier wirklich deutlich gemacht, welch eine enorme Kunst handgemalte Matte Paintings sein konnten, da diese wirklich nicht annähernd unecht aussehen, so etwa das wundervolle Schlussbild-Panorama oder die verschiedenen Einstellungen der gigantischen Burg. Hiervon kann man sich auch in einem etwa einminütigen Vorher-Nachhervergleich im Bonusmaterial der Blu-Ray überzeugen.Überhaupt war « Willow » ein Meilenstein der Tricktechnik, denn hier wurde so ziemlich jede damals verfügbare Technik verwendet, seien es besagte Matte Paintings, Make-Up-Effekte, animatronische Kreaturen, Stop Motion, Bluescreen-Techniken und damals bahnbrechende digitale Effekte in Form von Morphing. Dieser Prozess musste von ILM damals erst erfunden werden, um die Verwandlung der Magierin Fin Raziel von einem Wesen zum anderen in einer nahtlosen Einstellung zu visualisieren. Mehr hierzu und wie der Morphing-Effekt in späteren Filmen wie « The Abyss » und « Terminator 2 » eingesetzt wurden, gibt es in einer tollen, 17-minütigen Featurette zu sehen.Es ist dennoch erstaunlich, wie gut sich « Willow » gehalten hat, natürlich wirkt hier alles irgendwo greifbarer und echter als in manch einem Film aus dem Fantasy-Genre heutzutage, die den Fokus dann oft fast komplett auf Computer-Welten legen. Die echten Drehorte und praktischen Effekte wirken einfach plastisch, haben Gewicht, man glaubt wie in vielen anderen Filmen dieser Ära eine wirkliche Welt zu entfecken, keine virtuelle. Dazu kommt natürlich eine starke Kamerarbeit, tolle Farben und spannende Lichtsetzung, wodurch sich einfach eine tolle Atmosphäre ergibt. Hier wird einfach eine großartige Fantasywelt erschaffen. Ganz wichtig ist herfür natürlich auch James Horners wunderbare, abwechslungsreiche und erinnerungswürdige Filmmusik, die sofort emotionalisiert. »Willow » war in vielerlei Hinsicht als Film für Kinder, bzw. für das innere Kind von Erwachsenen konzipiert, George Lucas erhoffte sich von dem Film, einen ähnlichen Status wie « Der Zauberer von Oz » aufzubauen. So bietet der Film eine tatsächliche Filmmagie, durchaus auch einen nostalgischen Zauber. Den Filmemachern um Ron Howard gelang es, ein originelles Fantasy-Werk zu kreieren, das dank abwechslungsreicher Inszenierung für eigentlich jedes Alter geeignet ist, ein gewisses Faible für das Genre sollte man natürlich haben. So hat der Film viele sehr humorvolle, luftig-leichte und auch romantische Momente, spart aber auch nicht an Ernsthaftigkeit und düsteren Ideen. Hier schleicht sich durchaus auch der ein oder andere schwarzhumorige, hintergründige oder doppeldeutige Moment ein. Vor allem gefällt « Willow » aber gerade weil er nicht so komplex ist, nicht überladen, aber trotzdem mit eigener Mythologie.Alles in allem kann man jedenfalls sagen, dass « Willow » einfach ein sehr sympatischer, magischer, hochatmosphärischer Film mit guter Seele und schöner, klassischer Story ist, ein einfacher Spaß, bei dem man die Welt um sich herum völlig vergessen kann. Die Darsteller haben ebenfalls sichtlich Spaß mit ihren Rollen, besonders hervorzuheben ist Val Kilmer, dessen charmanter, farbenfroher und humorvoller Held wider Willen insgeheim ein Vorbild für Johnny Depps Jack Sparrow gewesen sein könnte. Besonders toll ist natürlich die Tatsache, dass « Willow » einen der seltenen Momente darstellte, in dem kleinwüchsige Darsteller im Ensemble eines großen Films glänzen konnten. Hier ist natürlich der damals 18-jährige Hauptdarsteller Warwick Davis zu nennen, der einen wirklich tollen, charismatischen Protagonisten gibt. Ganz klar, « Willow » ist absolutes Pflichtprogramm für Fantasy-Fans und Menschen, die ihr inneres Kind noch nicht vergessen haben.

Review: « Willow » is a fantasy movie I had heard about and knew I had seen at some point, but I didn’t remember much of it. I bought this movie because I’m a huge George Lucas fan and I knew he had a hand in this movie as producer, but what I didn’t know, upon further investigation, was that he also came up with the story and characters. The movie is directed by Lucas’ longtime friend, Ron Howard. I really enjoyed this movie and had fun following the character of Willow, played by Warwick Davis, on his quest in this movie. There are other reviews on here that go deeper into the story, so I won’t go into it, but it’s a fun movie that is very ’80s in its presentation, but that’s something I like about it as I’m a big ’80s movie fan. It’s incredible the amount of little people Lucas and director Ron Howard were able to get for this movie. Also, the real-world locations and sets used for « Willow » are well crafted and really make the world- building believable. I very much enjoyed the swordplay and fight sequences as well as the special effects, such as the morphing sequence, which was a technical breakthrough at the time. The Blu-ray includes a special feature covering this process amongst other documentaries covering the making of the movie.The recent death of actor Val Kilmer (RIP) prompted me to write this review. Kilmer brings courage, humor, and heroism to the role of Madmartigan. It’s funny when he dresses up as a woman to try to hide from the men in search of the baby. I hope that new generations will discover « Willow » and be entertained by his performance as Madmartigan. Also, Joanne Whalley is great in her portrayal of Sorsha. She and Kilmer would marry after having met on this movie. Pat Roach, who previously played a Nazi mechanic and a Thugee in the « Indiana Jones » movies ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark » and « Temple of Doom, » has a role as the evil skull faced General Kael. He is definitely terrifying.The picture presentation is great. Yes, it still looks very much ’80s, but it looks the best it can be in high – definition. The sound is great too. Then again, this is a Lucasfilm Ltd. production, so expect nothing less than the best in picture and sound. I highly recommend « Willow » to people who are looking for a new movie, fantasy or not, to enjoy.
