Review: “The Lesson” (original title “Urok”) is without a doubt, one of the best films I have seen for a long while. The narrative delivers a tense story that gets more and more tense, the more the film progresses. Between the writing and directing from Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov (they were each involved with the writing as well as the directing) and the performance from Margita Gosheva in the lead role of Nadezhda, a totally convincing film is presented. The photography looks like has all been very well done with hand held cameras which as well as adding to the realism of the film, it puts the viewer in close with what is taking place, and there is a documentary-like realism to it. “The Lesson” has a slow pace and that slowness makes an already tense situation all the more tense.Reference is made to Bulgaria’s recent Soviet past when in a scene early in the film some old Soviet military hardware is visible. It is dead and rusting, but it is still there literally hanging over the street – perhaps a reference to present day (circa 2014) Bulgaria with a struggling economy and corruption which are both portrayed in “The Lesson”.Margita Gosheva as Nadezhda is incredible in her performance and there is also a good supporting cast. At times of tension in the film there is an ironic comedic aspect to what takes place. There is also a scene in the film – I won’t say where, or say what happens, but it is an incredible moment where something is communicated non verbally and is one of the best scenes in the film and at that, in a film that in itself is one of the best films I’ve seen.I’d watched the 2016 film “Glory” a few days before watching the 2014 film “The Lesson” and found both films to be two of the best I’d seen in a very long time. “The Lesson” and “Glory” are both directed by Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov and both have Margita Gosheva and Stefan Denolyubov in the cast. If you watch and enjoy “The Lesson”. then I would recommend watching “Glory” as well.On the DVD (ASIN: B018M30PKG) you get:“The Lesson” (1 hour 51 minutes)Scene SelectionTrailerOptional 5.1 AudioOptional English Subtitles

Review: Nade is a school teacher of teenagers; her husband is a man who dotes on their daughter but also on the drink bottle. His nefarious carryings on have plummeted them into serious debt. She also has a side line in translating Bulgarian documents into English. Then one day one of her students has her purse stolen. It is obviously one of the class who is the culprit but Nade is unable to get them to fess up.Now she is presented with some stark choices as to how to pay off her debts and so begins a very harrowing and exhausting as well as emotionally draining journey that had me increasingly gripped.I have seen some comments that this is a slow start and I have to agree. However, you need to set the ground rules in order for the later events to have the fullest impact and I must say this really delivers. It is in Bulgarian and a bit of English, and runs to 111 minutes; it has also won a slew of awards and I have to say they are all completely deserved – recommended to lovers of European cinema and those who like their films to be a bit deeper.

Review: This 2015 neo-realist Bulgarian film is dominated by the outstandingly restrained and mesmerizing performance of Margita Gosheva as Nade, an honest hard-working middle-school teacher in a small provincial town, leading a stoical life of quiet desperation as she struggles to keep her family financially afloat while circumstances conspire to lead her down a nightmare ordeal of limited choices. After her feckless alcoholic husband squanders their money, and in order to prevent the bank from foreclosing on their loan by repossessing and auctioning their home Nade is forced to take out a loan from a ruthless loan shark, but when she finds herself unable to honour her debt she has to confront her moral principles and take tough decisions. The whole narrative has the stench of despondency running through it as it echoes themes explored in Ramin Bahrani’s excellent 99 Homes, while there is more than a touch of Mike Leigh in the utterly believable painful interactions between Nade and her father. Despite the presence of some jet black humour, the bleakness of the situation is unrelenting and although the narrative is undoubtedly tense and gripping it definitely does not make comfortable viewing. This is a film which made me pause and reflect.
