Title: Une vraie revelation

Review: Olivia (Marie-Claire Olivia) is an upper-class English teenager sent to school in France during the late 19th century. The school is housed in an elegant mansion with spiral staircases. She meets other students and headmistresses Miss Julie (Edwige Feuillère) and Miss Cara (Simone Simon). Miss Cara has frequent migraines and seldom leaves her room. Despite this handicap, there is a suggested rivalry between the two teachers for the attentions of the students. Olivia takes to admiring Miss Julie–to the chagrin of Miss Cara. Her admiration turns to something more serious leading to a clash between the headmistresses. The story moves at a brisk pace. The film is well acted and has a vibrant ambiance. There are light moments with the school’s St Bernard and more with the [thin] math teacher who is always eating in the kitchen. The cinematographer makes good use of light and shadow. The mansion is often lit with oil lamps, candles, and fireplaces. The costumes are nicely detailed. Many of the rooms are ornately decorated as was popular in Victorian times.Olivia is beautifully restored. The contrast is excellent with a nice range of grays. The picture is free of specks and free of damage. Grain is well resolved. The music and dialog sound very good considering the film’s age.Extras include the original trailer, a 2019 trailer, and an interview with the director, Jacqueline Audry. In the interview she talks about starting out as a script girl and working her way up to directing Gigi (1949).The video is 1080p AVC that I estimate at 20 Mbps. The audio is DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (mono). There are optional English subtitles.I highly recommend the film to those looking for something a little different with great visuals and plenty of replay value.

Review: A beautiful, sensitive, understated story about a young girl’s love and desire for one of her teachers at an exclusive French boarding school, which accounts for the film’s reputation as a landmark in lesbian cinema along with Maedchen in Uniform. Efficiently directed by a woman, a rare thing when the movie was made in the early 50s. I was concerned when placing my order that, considering the age of the film, the source print would be poor. However, to my relief, the blu-ray transfer is really quite good, indicating the film has apparently been restored.

Review: The boarding school depicted in OLIVIA is like a tableau found in a snowglobe: the encased surroundings are so confined and restricted that the slightest stirrings become monumental. And the girls in the school are entranced by the two teachers (played by Edwige Feuillere and Simone Simon). And that enchantment takes many forms. This is a beautifully textured look at the emotions which befall the young women in the school, and how so many differing emotions can cause such harsh and often melancholy reactions. This is a gentle movie, but with raging passions just beneath the lovely surfaces, and the movie does have an emotional outcome which is quite powerful.

Review: Item is sold as new but what I received is an opened case blu ray. That’s not a “new” item as expected when you receive a DVD or Blu-ray.
