Mon homme Godfrey est une comédie américaine en noir et blanc réalisée par Gregory La Cava en 1936. Tiré du roman d Eric Hatch, le film est une grande réussite, parmi les plus drôles et les plus équilibrées du genre. Archétype de la screwball comedy, ou comédie loufoque, l uvre combine légèreté et sarcasme : il en résulte une critique sociale, cinglante et drôle, autour de l époque de la Grande Dépression. Le film reçut 6 nominations aux Oscar®. Pendant la Grande Dépression, les riches passent leur temps à faire la fête. Un soir, la haute bourgeoisie décide de se lancer dans une chasse au trésor très particulière, où le gagnant sera celui qui rapporte non pas un objet précieux, mais quelque chose dont personne ne veut. C’est ainsi qu’Irene (Carole Lombard), l’une des filles de la famille Bullock, ramène Godfrey (William Powell), un vagabond trouvé dans un campement. Impressionnée par ses bonnes manières, la jeune femme décide de lui offrir un emploi comme majordome de la famille… La cruelle Cornelia, la s ur d’Irene, éprouve rapidement une véritable aversion pour le nouveau venu, mais Godfrey s’avère capable de lui tenir tête et Irene, amusée, trouve en lui une protection contre les méchancetés de sa s ur. Mais que cache-t-il, cet homme que l’on surnomme The Duke ?

Title: Une pure merveille du cinéma
Review: Amateurs de dialogues succulents, de mises en scènes irréprochables et de scénarii parfaits, ce chef-d’oeuvre est pour vous. Les acteurs y sont tous excellents et La Cava est un maître du cinéma classique hollywoodien. Un film qui laisse pantois et qui fait rire beaucoup plus qu’aux larmes… Génialissime.

Title: Un gros probleme avec la copie
Review: My man Godfrey est un film que j’aime beaucoup et que j’avais envie de montrer à ma fille pour lui faire découvrir des « vieux » films. J’ai l’habitude de regarder les films en V.O. et là j’ai choisi la plus mauvaise copie existante qui a rendu le visionnage du film IMPOSSIBLE. La qualité du son est terrible et le pire de tout – PAS DE SOUS-TITRES!!!! Et je ne parle même pas des sous-titres en français – il n’y a pas des sous-titres anglais pour malentendant – il n y a RIEN!!! Donc en résumé, on ne peut pas regarder le film en anglais à cause du son très mauvais, on ne peut pas le regarder en français parce que la version n’existe pas sur le disque et on ne peut pas le regarder avec des sous-titres parce que il n y en a pas!!!Il ne m’est même pas passé par la tête d’imaginer qu’il n y aura peut être pas des sous-titres pour malentendants – c’est la moindre des choses et Amazon s’est bien garder de préciser ce grande, grande manque. Cette copie est une arnaque et gaspillage d’argent.

Im Unterschied zu den vielen minderwertigen DVD-Ausgaben, die von dem Public-Domain-Film kursieren, liegt bei Criterion ein neuer digitaler Transfer von einem 35mm-Negativduplikat vor. Bild und Ton wurden restauriert.Gregory La Cavas (1892-1952) »My Man Godfrey« (1936) ist ein großartiger Höhepunkt der Hollywood-Komödienkunst. Und er bringt einen ganz eigenen Ton in die reichhaltige Komödienlandschaft der 1930er Jahre ein.Die Story: Es beginnt auf einer städtischen Müllkippe, wo die Armen und die Verlierer der Weltwirtschaftskrise leben. Für einen Moment denkt man an Frank Capras märchenartige Sozialkomödien. Doch der Eindruck verfliegt rasch wieder. Luxuslimousinen halten an der Müllkippe. Angehörige der reichen Oberschicht steigen aus. Für fünf Dollar versucht eine reiche Dame einen Obdachlosen dazu zu bewegen, mit ihr zu kommen. Sie nehme an einem Gesellschaftsspiel in einem Luxushotel teil, bei dem eine der Aufgaben darin bestehe, einen ›vergessenen Mann‹ zu präsentieren. Der Obdachlose lehnt mit Bestimmtheit ab, und nach einem kurzen Disput stößt er die Dame in den Müll. Empört zieht sie ab.Eine zweite Dame – wie sich herausstellt, die Schwester der ersten – fragt den Obdachlosen in aller Naivität, ob er als ihr ›vergessener Mann‹ fungieren wolle. Sie bekennt aber auch, dass sie das Gesellschaftsspiel, das echte Menschen wie Spielsteine benutze, ein bisschen missbillige. Der Obdachlose geht mit ihr, gelangt auf die Veranstaltung moralisch ziemlich debiler Reicher und erklärt dort öffentlich, was er von all dem hält.Die ›bessere Gesellschaft‹ empört sich, doch die junge Frau, die den Obdachlosen präsentiert hatte, verlangt von ihren neureichen Eltern trotzig, dass der Mann bei ihnen als Butler eingestellt werde. So geschieht es.Die familiäre Situation ist aus anderen Filmen – oder auch aus George McManus’ berühmten Comic Strip »Bringing up Father« – bekannt: Der Vater ist ein klobiger Kerl, der vor allem ans Geschäft denkt und Luxus sowie Verschwendung verabscheut. Die Mutter ist laut, auf Statusfragen fixiert (ohne je den richtigen Ton zu treffen) und begreift selten etwas. Die beiden Töchter sind im Luxus groß geworden; sie sind weltfremd und moralisch höchst unreif. Die Haushälterin, die den neuen Butler in seine Stellung einführt, bemerkt treffend, die ganze Familie sei ›nutty‹.Der Film präsentiert keine Jeder-kann-es-schaffen-Botschaft, er versucht noch nicht einmal, Mitgefühl für die Verlierer der Depressionsära zu erwecken. Hier mag man sich fragen, ob der Film sich hinsichtlich des Elends wirklich so sehr von dem perversen Gesellschaftsspiel der Reichen am Filmbeginn unterscheidet. Eine gewisse Frivolität kann man dem Film jedenfalls nicht absprechen.Andererseits ist aber auch nicht so, dass La Cavas Reiche bloß liebenswerte Menschen mit einem Spleen sind (das wäre Preston Sturges’ Ansatz, wie Diane Jacobs im Booklet zur DVD bemerkt). Die Reichen sind so deformiert, wie der Film es am Anfang zeigt, und man kann auch nicht sicher sein, dass sich daran etwas Wesentliches ändern wird.Der Schluss des Films hat etwas von einer Überrumplung, die viele Fragen offen lässt. Aber das durfte, wenn der Film seinen eigenen Ansatz ernst nimmt, auch nicht anders sein. Wenn der Film zuende ist, ist die Geschichte noch lange nicht auserzählt, falls sie es denn überhaupt jemals sein wird.Grandios sind die schauspielerischen Leistungen. William Powell ist als Godfrey exzellent, Carole Lombard war wohl nie besser. Sie hat die schwierigste Aufgabe, und sie bewältigt sie erstklassig. Traumhaft sicher hält sie ihre Figur auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen Karikatur und Menschlichkeit. Auch alle Nebenrollen sind eindrucksvoll besetzt. Die Story hat Tempo. Die Dialoge sind genauso frisch wie am ersten Tag.Die DVD erfüllt die hohen Criterion-Standards. Als Extras gibt es neben dem üblichen Trailer und einer Stills Galery einen Audiokommentar von Filmhistoriker Bob Gilpin sowie eine komplette Hörspieladaption des Stücks von 1938 mit William Powell und Carole Lombard.

Review: The ancient writers of the past used to write their books would age when people were educated and became better..if education was really the problem. Here we have a play…and a movie which was nominated for 6 academy awards so they saw it was a compelling film when made,,,which it remains today. It is really a story od human nature as we see at the beginning of the film when a character reads a greek story and medievals…and this thought comes up later…a foreshadowing of what the play is about. It was an important film with carole lombard and william powell two stars of the time,and it is really a story about cities. It was made at a time of the depression.and a few films in europe,concerning cities,which occurs during desperate times…and here we have a farrago of people from different places a bum…who encounters very rich and able people…who actually have a part to play in reforming the city in various ways…and various persons in the city and investigations…and godfrey…or god/frey a person who loves not in words or this or that but in behaviors…and a story is fabricated that he preys on the woman he shows love and kindness too…a woman in the house we dont know whom she is acting on and the wealthy owner calls the police to investigate…and the story is really about love..and its disarming nature..and at movie’s end there are jokes about the city and drownings…and where the power of the city actually lies. The ancient and medieval worlds were worlds about love…and they’ve created a modern story..and who will exact retribution and it was very good of carole lombard to give her name and reputation to this fantasy since its not really a story of her in the film….its actually a group here which is the focus…and she does play the part well as she always does as she also has the difficult role in herself to show how love is transformed in a few short scenes…which is what hampers the film since it is short and its just not possible to portray…but she’s great as always. Very few films are colourized at a time many black and whites classics usually of great cinematic value…like john huston’s and others…since younger people have trouble focusing on black and white..which makes younger people less aware ofcertain things their forbears were…a good lesson and a good parenting skill…is to allow younger people towatch black and white films as this will be of benefit…john huston would say black and white films are by far greater than colour,,,what he didnt say was that has a lot to do with people…but i see his point…in this colorized film which is so good since carole lombard knows how to transform her portaits of people and show moodsand aspects and psychological states in very short time…the movies she’s in would be quite different withouther..i do recall years ago seeing her and clark gable in a movie(early on since she avoided films with him)..and you recall her since she really could act…what does that tell us about the 30’s…all those silent actors who tried to make the transition…the last words of this film is a character using the word ‘transmute’ which was the ancient art of the apothecary in medieval times…and i recall a book from years ago ‘psychology and alchemy’ those wishing to educate themselves on ancient virtues and history….and there is that word psychology…

Review: ‘My Man Godfrey’ is a great movie.Its intended audience were people who had made-their-way through The Great Depression so for those of us who came along later … we probably ‘miss’ some of its subtleties (and some things not so subtle).Is the central theme of ‘a bum from the city dump saves a rich family from itself’ even remotely plausible ? Probably not … but the movie is great fun to watch.
