Title: Mémorable film culte, excellente copie
Review: Le fond.Que le cinéma était beau et libre à l’époque !Miou-miou la délicieuse, Gérard et Patrick en mauvais garçons, Jeanne et Brigitte les sensibles, et les autres… Pour citer Le Point : “Au lieu que le sordide nous empoisse, ces Pieds Nickelés salaces nous mettent l’allégresse au cœur”.Seuls les (déjà) gardiens de la pensée moralisatrice n’ont pas perçu le souffle de liberté jubilatoire. Un film qu’il serait impossible de tourner de nos jours : profitons-en tant qu’il ne sera pas interdit à la vente.La forme.Une excellente restauration, des images bien contrastées, un son en Dolby stéréo : impeccable. Comme bien d’autres films de l’époque, dont beaucoup n’ont même pas eu la chance d’être réenregistrés en DVD, celui-ci est à acquérir tant qu’il est encore disponible.

Review: Two small time hoods (Gerard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere) spend their days roaming the streets, robbing stores, and molesting women. In some ways this is truly an amazing film in what it is able to get away with. The two main characters are immoral, ignorant, insensitive, and brutal and the women are demeaned and degraded. The overall content is vulgar and perverse and yet somehow this thing comes off as a lyrical, offbeat delight that is pure entertainment.It’s a definite original with every scene being an ingenious comic set-up. The scenario structure and use of locations is perfect. The pacing is fluid and director Bertrand Blier’s eye for detail near brilliant. The two hours move along like a breeze. It never gets boring and I actually almost wished it could have been longer.The comic threads are hilarious and they get funnier and funnier as they go along. The guys’ constant, futile and very explicit attempts at getting a « frigid » woman (Miou-Miou) excited are a particular standout.This is the type of black comedy that should be used as an example for all others. It’s consistently unique and manages to balance the ugly elements with the lighthearted without going overboard on either. It even throws in a surreal angle without a hitch.Veteran French actress Jeanne Moreau has one of her finest latter career roles playing a lonely lady in desperate need of male attention. Her scene is well played out and even has a shocking conclusion. Depardieus ‘friendly’ conversation with a shopping mall security guard is another standout. The ultimate joke though may be in the film’s title as these guys are truly going nowhere.

Review: Les Valseuses is a Classic French film and you need an open mind, as it could easily offend, otherwise it is beautifully shot, funny and the sort of story line you won’t find anywhere else outside of the French film industry, I found it quite arty as well as entertaining (part of me feels a pang of guilt at enjoying the movie as it has scenes that are just odd, bizarre and downright wrong, having said that I also like a film called Bad Santa which is nothing like this movie but makes me crease with laughing) Hard to believe Les Valseuses is so old but it remains undated and every bit as enjoyable as when I saw it 20 years ago, I think the relationship betwix the two unlikely friends amuses me the most, just looking at the way they walk sets me off, what a pair of clowns, the only truly shocking part of the film which i dislike is the violent end of the lady they pick up from the prison, unpleasant to say the least ! so to summarise you will laugh if you do not take political correctness too serious and have are not a strong womens lib supporter, slightly pervey sniffing of girls pants may disturb some, and the incident on the train but hey – it’s only a film,
