Title: Excellente version d’un chef d’oeuvre fondateur

Title: La chevauchée fantastique

Quel dommage.

Review: Great movie. DVD was made in Korea, obviously with Korean writing on the DVD cover. Movie has automatically on screen Korean subtitles that you have to go to menu and turn off. Picture quality for a 1939 movie was amazing. I’m very happy with my purchase.

Review: “Stagecoach” was the first western Ford made since shooting “Three Bad Men” in 1926; they say he planted the seed for the adult western, which had more impact on westerns of the fifties. The producers wanted Ford to use Gary Cooper, but Ford insisted on John Wayne, and for that I guess Wayne owed him a great debt; he would still have been churning out more B-westerns like actors Buck Jones and Tim McCoy, but definitely not as Singing Sandy! I thought Wayne’s first starring role in “The Big Trail” (1930) was acceptable and the epic film was overlooked; apparently the production costs were 10-times more than “Stagecoach”, which reportedly cost $250,000 to produce. Director John Ford started filming in Monument Valley in 1938, he was professional in that he could edit whilst filming, and never wasted much film.Ford took the crew and John Wayne to film the Indian attack in a dry lake bed near Victorville, the attack lasted about 9-minutes with 104 shots, with some amazing stunts involving Yakama Canutt. Only John Wayne out of the principle actors was with the Stagecoach, the other actors were shot against a processed projection back at the studios. A simple uncomplicated story, Ford had a way of introducing all the characters quickly and effectively, when some directors failed through their entire picture. I have watched this film many times, and noticed something I’d never seen before. The street set for Tonto from where the story starts was shot on the back lot at Republic Pictures, where John Wayne had spent most of the thirties rolling out B-westerns.Claire Trevor acted with her eyes, and Ford did many close ups of her for that reason; she could have had better parts if she had been under contract instead of independent. She thought Ford was excessively tough on Wayne throughout filming and felt sorry for him; but was overwhelmed by the picture, and knew it would be good. Tim Holt only appeared in 3 scenes during the film, but was apparently paid more than John Wayne who appeared throughout the film. Interesting that Orson Welles studied “Stagecoach” by watching it 45 times to understand how a movie was put together before he made “Citizen Kane”.The two disc special edition is well worth watching, as it includes Special Features: – The Filmmaker and the Legend, narrated by Sydney Pollack – I hour 23 minutes; Stagecoach- A story – 30 minutes; Stagecoach as a radio program featuring Randolph Scott and Claire Trevor – 26 minutes, I do believe that if Randolph Scott had been directed by John Ford he could have been a bigger star of quality; he was very good in “The Last of the Mohicans”, “Western Union” and “Ride the High Country”, but some of his films dragged along from badly written stories and cheap production; The commentary over the film by Scott Eyman was very interesting, I’m not a great lover of commentary over the entire film, as it can be frustrating and annoying that the story they are talking about bears no resemblance to the scene being shown. I’d rather see the person making the comments on camera, and then show the scenes they are talking about, instead of unnecessarily showing the whole film.

Review: A great adventure western that in many ways is comparable to the classic movie « Lifeboat ». Like Lifeboat, a collection of people from different social levels are trapped together under great stress. Amongst the urban travelers is Ringo (Wayne) as the prison breaking cowboy out to avenge the death of his brother. Old Doc Boone played by one of the greatest character actors of the period Thomas Mitchell, an alcoholic orator banned from the town. The beautiful Dallas, a good woman who is either a saloon girl or more obvious, a lady of the evening, forced into those labors purely due to economic hardship. The suspicious mysterious gambler Hatfield who was a confederate officr in the war but has a strange consuming chivalrous attitude for the high brow Captain’s wife. The pregnant wife trying to reach her husband serving in the cavalry, the self confident elitist banker, the frightened but religous whiskey salesman (Doc Boone adopts),the tough Sheriff and the famous sidekick of all time, Andy Devine playing the not so bright but honest stagecoach driver. The movie is fascinating as the personalities divide up amongst their social classes with Wayne’s great line after several patrons move away from Dallas, Wayne thinks he is the reason as he utters « I guess you can’t break out of prison and into society in the same week ». Great tension as the stagecoach moves further into Indian territory as they become more isolated as they constantly just miss the protective army. The end culminates into the great western climax of a tremendous Indian attack with the odds terribly against them as the stagecoach tries to flee. The big question, will the cavalry get there in time. But the movie is not over as the Ringo Kid (Wayne) still has a score to settle. Watch the main villan in the final scenes as he apparently appears more suited for silent films, he rarely speaks but does a lot more with physical acting and facial features. Aside from a wonderful thrilling action western, the film has great dialogue:Doc Boone, « Ringo didn’t I fix your broken arm? »Ringo, « No that was my brother, you did a great job considering you was drunk »Doc Boone beaming, « Professional compliments are always pleasing »The movie itself is a great character study. Those that have the appearance of strength perhaps due to position or wealth are tested under stress and those that appear weak or labeled bad have great fortitude, which shows that one cannot judge someone by what they have or who they appear to be.
