Review: Je ne comprends pas pourquoi ce film n’a pas eu + de succès. Je ne suis pas fan de Michael Douglas, mais il joue vraiment super bien dans ce film. Rien a re dire sur le jeu de Evan Rachel Woods, toujours parfaite. L’histoire est vraiment sympa et certainement + originale que beaucoup de films qui sortent tous les jours. Je recommande vivement.

Review: Miranda est une adolescente indépendante. Elle a quittée l’école et a un travail dans un fast-food qui lui permet de vivre sa vie librement dans la maison familiale dans laquelle elle vit seule grâce à ses astuces pour tromper les services sociaux.Un jour, son père Charlie, un original maniaco-dépressif interné dans un hopital psychiatrique, réapparaît dans sa vie et l’entraîne petit à petit dans sa nouvelle lubie en date : retrouver le trésor d’un prêtre espagnol du 17ème siècle qu’il pense être enterré dans le coin et dont il pense avoir retrouvé la trace.Evidement la question qui s’impose est, est-ce encore un délire de plus de la part de son vieux père loufoque ou est-ce que le vieux fou n’est en fait pas si fou que ça.En arrière-plan, la question dont le film traite est qu’en est-il, en fait, de la validité de notre norme concernant la raison et la déraison ? La frontière entre le génie et la folie n’est-elle pas parfois un peu floue et même un peu fluctuante suivant le contexte ? Y a-t-il vraiment une norme absolue et indépassable dans ce domaine ?Evidemment, poser la question en ces termes, c’est déjà y répondre et vous savez d’ores et déjà dans quelle direction va aller le film.Il n’y a vraiment que deux acteurs d’importance dans ce film : Michael Douglas, méconnaissable en vieil homme excentrique, et la jeune et lumineuse Evan Rachel Wood.Sans être un chef-d’oeuvre je trouve que c’est un petit film plutôt sympa, qui se laisse regarder.

Title: Une aura de little miss sunshine
Review: Le boitier DVD est l’exact reflet de ce que peut dégager ce long métrage. Quelques chose de simple et c’est sans doute pour cela qu’il me laisse un arrière gout de Little miss Sunshine voir même de conte de fée pour adulte.Quoiqu’il en soit si vous avez adhérer au film précédemment citée, il n’y a pas de raison qu’il en soit autrement pour celui ci !Je mets 3 étoiles parce que même si ça a l’odeur de la bonne vieille soupe à mamie, ce n’est tout de même pas le même gout !

Review: « But look at the world… » says Charlie in reply to his daughter Miranda’s accusation that he takes nothing seriously and views the world as existing simply for his amusement, in Mike Cahill’s lyrical and nurturing masterpiece « King of California ». The bi-polar Charlie is played by Michael Douglas and sixteen-year-old Miranda by Evan Rachel Wood. The story is told from the put-upon Miranda’s point-of-view and supplemented with both her voiceover narration and the occasional flashback.In the flashbacks a younger Miranda is convincingly played by a pre -« Sonny with a Chance » Allisyn Ashley Arm. Arm was not just an excellent physical match for Wood, but a stylistic one as well; the two actresses share a non-verbal acting style, gently teasing their portrayal of a character who does a whole lot of on-camera processing of her father’s often baffling and exasperating antics. In several flashbacks single parent Charlie sends his nine-year-old daughter to school with a diorama of a California mission (presumably the one in San Fernando) they just constructed, littered with « the bodies of the Chumash Indians, who died of Syphilis and Influenza, infected by the missionaries ». The film’s most visually compelling sequence is nine-year-old Miranda striding home hurt and angry after the diorama has landed her in trouble at school, betrayed by her father’s poor judgement.Charlie is obsessed with the notion that the long-lost treasure of Spanish explorer Father Juan Florismarte Torres is buried somewhere near their Santa Clarita Valley house. As Miranda reads the Torres journal in voiceover, she and Charlie retrace the path of his expedition across the valley in search of the treasure he buried. There is a political element to the story in the juxtaposing of descriptions of old California with images of the suburban sprawl that has obliterated much of the state’s history. This is further illustrated by Miranda’s adaptive qualities and Charlie’s stubborn refusal to adapt; it is the only significant difference between the two characters and introduces a lot of poignancy into the story because the quality they admire the most in each other is the one they do not share.For Miranda, having Charlie as a father is a Southern California version of « Alice and Wonderland ». Her self-reliant character is positioned midway between Alice and young heroine Jeliza-Rose in Terry Gilliam’s Tideland (2005). And she shares many of their virtues; innocence, courage, curiosity, wonder, kindness, intelligence, courtesy, dignity, and a sense of justice. While she shares Alice’s irritation with the rude and illogical situations they encounter in their respective wonderlands, she is considerably more adaptable. Alice was a confident and proper little Victorian girl who expected a certain standard of behavior, while Miranda and Jeliza Rose are skilled at making the best of a variety of sucky situations.Physically Wood has never looked better, like Audrey Hepburn she is more dazzling with minimal makeup and everyday fashions – including a McDonald’s uniform. She simply glows in the final sequence’s extreme close-ups, standing on a bluff above the beach as she processes the predicted illegal landing of a group of Chinese boat people. And in this moment she totally sells the story, which at its core is simply the story of a father and daughter with a unqualified love for each other. Interestingly, Wood is so effective in this final sequence that she turns what in normal screenplay structure would be the aftermath, into the film’s climatic moment; then they go out with the credits.Then again, what do I know? I’m only a child.

Review: Der Film ist kein Angriff auf die Lachmuskeln und rührt auch nicht zu Tränen, aber er macht immer mal wieder Spaß und bringt einem an den richtigen Stellen zum betroffenen Schweigen oder ehrlichen Schmunzeln. Ein Vater frisch aus der Psychatrie hat dort statt der geistigen Genesung, Hinweise auf einen verlorenen Schatz gefunden und strapaziert mit der daraus folgenden Idee die Nerven seiner Tochter. Michael Douglas zeigt was er kann, in einer Rolle die man so von ihm wohl nicht erwartet hätte

The film stars Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood.This film seemed to vanish in the UK, which is a great shame -it has a highly original script, and a great cast. I took the main theme is: keep an eye on reality and follow your dreams with great caution advised.The film also chronicles the sad decline of the ‘real’ America in favour of rampant residential development, superstores and MacDonalds restaurants.At the age of 16, Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood) has been abandoned by her mother, and has dropped out of school. She is supporting herself as an employee at McDonalds while her bi-polar father, Charlie (Michael Douglas), resides in a mental institution.When Charlie is released and sent back to their home, Miranda finds the relatively peaceful existence she’s built for herself completely disrupted. Charlie has become obsessed with the notion that the long-lost treasure of Spanish explorer Father Juan Florismarte Torres is buried somewhere near their suburban California house in the Santa Clarita Valley. Armed with a metal detector and a stack of treasure-hunting books, Charlie soon finds reason to believe that the gold resides underneath the local Costco, and encourages Miranda to get a job there so that they can plan a way to excavate after hours.Initially skeptical, Miranda soon finds herself joining in Charlie’s questionable antics in an effort to give him one last shot at accomplishing his dreams.Highly recommended.
