Title: Encore une fort brillante comédie !
Review: L’éditeur Tanasa a eu la riche idée de sortir ce coffret des British comedies et d’autres films séparément .D’abord , les copies sont bonnes voire très bonnes et , je suppose , remastérisées .Sellers , ici , joue , avec brio , un rôle complexe : ce pasteur est à la fois naïf et idéaliste jusqu’à une forme d’inconscience voire de folie douce , avec une mauvaise appréciation du milieu local des paroissiens mais aussi de la nombreuse famille Smith , prolétaires demi-loqueteux sans beaucoup de scrupules et qui l’exploiteront . En même temps , il est très lucidement provocateur .Il remplira finalement son église mais il ira trop loin et sera expédié …ailleurs !Savoureux portraits de tout ce petit monde , de la hiérarchie anglicane , des notables locaux .Toute la distribution est excellente .Mise en scène enlevée et montage talentueux .La fin est particulièrement originale mais , finalement , totalement cohérente .Seul bémol : le film est un peu long ( près de 2h00 ) pour une comédie et cela lui enlève du rythme : quelques longueurs …

Review: Contrairement aux indications d’Amazon le film est en VO ST Français.On ne rigole pas de la même manière avec l’obligation de déchiffrer des sous-titres qui très souvent font pas mal de raccourcis !.Rien ne vaut les langues d’origines ou les bons doublages ( il y en a) pour ceux qui ne sont pas polyglottes.Bon courage pour les autres. Dommage.En attendant il faudrait modifier l’annonce. (Merci Amazon)

Review: So much more than a comedy this great film questions life itself. Are we here for each other or for ourselves? I think we all know what the answer is but try getting that to truly work for all! This film shows the potential consequences as the chaos unfolds. Great performances from Sellars and some of the great character actors of the day. Can watch this little gem over and over again. A rainy Sunday afternoon treat of a film. A British classic.

Review: This is one of two important Sellers films in which Sellers gets upstaged by Kenneth Griffith. Griffith only lasts a minute or two but his fiery Welsh vicar is well worth having, and he’s a British great too. In this case Sellers creates one of his best character performances and I like this character particularly. He joins up with Ian Carmichael again. On my TV the widescreen masking at the bottom on the right flickers irritatingly, which I’ve not had before. Otherwise a fine print of a great Sellers film.PS – I’ve since changed my TV and don’t get that problem any more.

Review: I am so glad this old film as come out on DVD. It is a joy to watch again and there are so many brilliant performances in it.Other reviewers have outlined the plot. I will just add that this superb film is not really a comedy at all, it is a very clever satire on the way we all behave. Very clever and amusing and most enjoyable.

Review: « Be careful what you wish for; you may get it. » That seems to be the case with this 1963 gem. Rev. John Smallwood (Peter Sellers) is an Anglican priest who is the epitome of the unwavering, though naïve, Christian. Never afraid of what people or mobs may think, he revolutionizes life in the fictional town of Orbiston Parva. A major convert is Lady Despard, wife of a late drug magnate. Listening to Smallwood and reading her Bible, she decides to sell all that she has (all the stock that she owns in the company) and gives it to the poor through food distribution. Unfortunately, some recipients of the food gifts aren’t the needy poor. Some of the wealthy in town send the chauffeur to the food pantry for the week’s groceries. The head of the Smith clan, to which Smallwood has given the rectory to as living space, reserves some of the food not to give to the most poor, but to sell on the black market. Shop keepers like the butcher and grocer lose customers and are bankrupted by Lady Despard’s generosity. Her kindness has national consequences. Because the sale of her majority ownership of stock ruins confidence in the firm, the family drug company is bankrupt, and its 200 employees lose their jobs. The film raises the issue of balancing Christian charity with Christian justice.
