for Freedom (2015 Edition) [DVD] [Import]

Review: Given the low price, I wasn’t expecting much from this 1940 semi-documentary about the events leading up to WWII and the true story of the battle of the River Plate off the coast of Montevideo, but it turned out to be a cracking film, which uses newsreel footage of the day to great effect. The fictional story which weaves the events together concerns a British newsreel chief and his son, played by Will Fyffe and Anthony Hulme, who are in the process of making an upbeat film on human achievement and the benefits of international cooperation. But when Hitler invades Czechoslovakia, the father reverts to his original idea of ‘Shadow Over Europe’, which will be much more entertaining than a story about peace. The movie proved to be a very successful propaganda effort, and for modern audiences it may be easier to take than some of the other thumping, one-dimensional vehicles of the day, with a lot of humour and a welcome element of satire about the media and its priorities. As for the war itself, how could anyone at that time have known the enormity of the horrors to come.It was made by Gainsborough and directed by Maurice Elvey and Castleton Knight, with a screenplay by Miles Malleson and Leslie Arliss. Actors with small roles include Hugh McDermott, Robert Beatty, Wally Patch and an excellent German actor who used to appear in British movies in the early sixties, including the Edgar Wallace series – sadly, his name escapes me. There are also some very authentic reenactments of the battle of the River Plate, featuring the naval personnel who actually took part in it. The DVD boasts a good print for its age, with reasonable sound quality, although there are no subtitles. The background music is loud and rousing, as you would expect from newsreels of the day, which were made to be shown in cinemas not in the comfort of one’s own home. Running time 82 minutes.
