Title: Sympa

Review: Let’s begin with the fact that I love all three stars who headline this amazing, perfectly photographed and nimbly scripted film — and I am a very demanding critic, having worked in the industry & being myself a highly skilled writer. If I tell you a film is well written, beautifully directed & brilliantly acted, with sensitivity & conviction, you can take that assessment to the bank: it is a solid & well-founded conclusion.Yes, I love birds, but I only know a handful by name & am not a birder. But maybe if I make some real money and keep my health, I can see myself going on a birding expedition in my venerable years, although nothing nearly as ambitious as the subject of this film.Even without any sex or smooching, I found this film a complete, 100%, A++++ turn-on. It must have been that spectacular footage of the bald eagle mating flight.I chose to watch it because I have become quite a fan of none other than the fabulously versatile, low-key (Stanislavsky-method style, in the finest Chekhov tradition) Mr. Owen Wilson. He made me laugh in « Shanghai Noon » with Jackie Chan, but he really hit the spot with Woody Allen’s sublime « Midnight in Paris. »Well, he outdoes himself here, delivering a stunning performance as one of the world’s greatest birders, consumed with a competitive spirit that is only eclipsed by his knowledge of & passion for birds. The charmingly grounded Jack Black & Steve Martin (who never disappoints, even though he rarely ‘transforms’ himself in any role) complete the ensemble. Kudos to the writer & director for delivering a truly pitch-perfect, perfectly-wrought tribute to three very different, delightful, quintessentially American types of our time, all equally compelling. If you understand acting, and actors, and love to watch them at their best, you will love every second of this film. There isn’t a false note or unanchored syllable in it, and the secondary roles and even the supernumeraries are thoroughly engaging. It’s a great way to escape for a couple of hours from the problems of the moment & revisit all the wonders that make us all a single humankind on a shared planet. Even the rivalries & ruthless competition are friendly. (If you are addicted to violence, you will hate this film: no punches are thrown. On the other hand, again: that amazing bald eagle sequence.)Sets, music, costumes, props, music — every tiny detail is exactly right. One more thing about Wilson: it takes high intelligence and amazing sensitivity to deliver a performance that seems utterly natural, unaffected, breathtakingly serene even at its most intensely breathless moments. As has been proven many times before: the essence of Genius is in making the impossible & improbable & even the miraculous appear completely ordinary, effortless & natural.I want to thank everyone associated with this film, which made not much in its first run — I certainly did not even know it existed! — for pouring all their heart & soul & wit & of course their physical presence into an unusual yet so extraordinarily astonishing film. It left me elated & happy to be alive on a planet where such people exist — not only the filmmakers themselves, but also the bird lovers who have inspired them, as the film is based on a true story.Any critic who failed to discern the greatness of this motion picture has been watching too much junk and lost their mind along the way. That is the only excuse I can think of for giving it a poor review. Seriously. Do you just turn off your brains when you switch on the screen? Or do you concentrate on the popcorn?Any cinephile will adore this work. I know it will go into a lot of people’s gifts this year — from me. Perfect for all ages & cultures. How can you not love the planet? How can an animated film about penguins make more money than this celebration of a thousand or so amazing varieties of other birds? How could the jury at Cannes not have paid attention?Well, I aim to shift the balance a bit. WATCH THIS FILM. GET HEALTHIER.My only regret is I did not see this in an IMAX theatre or on a big screen. But it’s good enough to merit getting an in-home cinema.Live long & prosper, Birders! You too, Owen, Jack & Steve!Late in the 20th Andrei Tarkovsky: a Photographic Chronicle of the Making of the Sacrifice

Review: It’s worth pointing out that I have zero interest in bird watching.First viewing from a rental DVD:I was expecting a little stage play with three lead actors and a tiny supporting cast talking in various bird watching huts and bits of scrubland. Instead it was an expensive, slick film with a giant geographic reach as many, many short little scenes are set in different states in America. It was not a great film, and I can see why people might find it to be like watching paint dry as it really is about people looking at birds with very little human dramatic content. I think though that it succeeds at what it’s trying to do, and that it’s about as good a movie as could have been made from the subject matter. It held my attention without any hint of boredom and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A very solid, respectable film.Second viewing about a year later of the extended edit on Blu-Ray:A highly enjoyable, pleasant little movie about nothing much. There really isn’t much dramatic meat to it, which means it’s hard to think more of it beyond how cosy and warm it is. It’s quite a grand, large scale movie and it looks lavish and expensive. It’s very good looking. The book, which I read about a week before re-watching the film, is superior with so much more in it. Truly a good book almost always tops a good film. I watched the extended cut this time. Apparently about three minutes of extended moments have been added, but I didn’t notice anything new. After I finished it I realised that John Cleese did a new third person voice over in the extended version, replacing Jack Black’s first person narration of the cinema edit (I had no memory of any voice over in the movie from my first viewing). I haven’t done an in-depth comparison but I did briefly check out Black’s voice over. I think Black’s version is perhaps slightly better. I’m unsure what edit I will favour on future viewings. Perhaps I’ll flip flop between them? Some of the deleted scenes on the disc, not included in the extended cut, would have made an impression if they were included in the final movie as they would have add a bit of tension earlier on between the characters (specifically everything on the first boat trip – the autograph conversation; the extend meeting between Martin and Black; and Martin seeing Black walking past his restaurant window). I like the movie a lot, and it’s fairly flaw free for what it is, but I can’t honestly say it’s a remarkable or amazing film due to how nice and inconsequential it all is. There’s just not enough drama for it to be a fully one hundred percent satisfying movie. If you like the film you will love the 2004 book The Big Year: The Extraordinary Story of the Greatest Bird-watching Competition of All Time.
