Title: une belle comedie
Review: bonjour,un film de Marcel carné désopilant avec des comédiens genial qui tranche avec les autres films de ce cinéaste plutôt sombre.

Title: C’était hier

Title: Relisons nos classiques

Review: I saw this film in France some years ago: we saw it twice or even 3 times, and it is one of the funniest films I remember. Note especially the « tueur des bouchers » – Jean.L. Barrault – with the large portrait of the sheep in his room.Younger viewers may find the absolute need for a cook unlikely. But, suspend disbelief, and you’ll have a wonderfully enjoyable session.

Review: If you are looking for a film that will really make you laugh, this is an excellent choice. In order to hide the fact that her cook and valet left the household (after an argument), the wife of a mild mannered botanist disappears when her husband’s self-righteous cousin, a bishop, shows up to eat duck a l’orange. Because the wife is absent, he thinks that his cousin has murdered his wife; so when he notifies Scotland Yard, everything goes from bad to worse. What makes this film so much fun are the outrageous characters – a Scotland Yard inspector who could not find his way out of a paper bag, a sanctimonious bishop who secretly goes to music halls to see pretty women, the wife of the botanist who is mostly concerned with money and status, a milkman who delivers outrageous amounts of milk and cream to the family for free so that he can see the object of his affection, the botanist who invents crime novels from stories from his maid who really gets them from the milkman, and the best personality of all – a sentimental killer who only murders butchers because he loves animals. Both the botanist and his wife befriend the killer for their own separate reasons. And boy, does the bishop get in trouble.Poke some fun at the bourgeoisie, the authorities, detective novelists, love-struck men, the proletariat, Edith Piaf, even the plants themselves. (The botanist carefully hand feeds his carnivorous plants with flies that he has caught).Put all these characters together into a crazy Chinese hotel in a bad part of town and you get a delightful comedy of manners and class. Many scenes had me smiling, if not falling to the floor. A delight.

Review: It is a pity there are no subtitles, because it is a very funny movie. Most French people I know, if they have seen it once, they have seen it several times. It is played by the best French actors of the 1940s. But the biggest attraction of the movie is its absurdity. There is a milkman in love, filling the kitchen with hundreds of milk bottles, and a naked killer of butchers, and a bishop in plaid skirts, and a botanist giving flies to his favorite plants. This nonsensical story is told with impeccable logic. It is inspired by a novel by J S Clouston and written by the French poet Prevert. Some sentences of the movie have made it to the 21st century.

Review: A wonderful classical French film, full of humour, played by some « monstres sacrés » of French cinema, like Louis Jouvet, Michel Simon, Francoise Rosay and Jean-Louis Barrault.
