Review: This is such a hilarious movie I don’t know how I missed it the first time through (well, actually I do – poor distribution by the studio). Take a reboot of « The Breakfast Club, » mix in a healthy dose of « Friday the 13th », add large amounts of ADD and a manic level of energy that suggests the scriptwriters overdosed on Red Bulls, and you’ve got it. Shanley Caswell is an absolute hoot as teenage outcast Riley Jones, who would commit suicide except that she’s (a) too much of a klutz to pull it off, and (b) is having too much fun or is too easily distracted to really want to die. The one drawback to her part is that it’s not too believable that even in the shark tank that is an average suburban high-school, anybody as terminally adorable and as quick on the draw in repartee as Riley could be that much of an outcast. Other eccentrics populating Grizzly Lake High School include Asian genius Toshiba, who is pining over Mimi, a black Lolita-Goth (and believe me, black lipstick and eye shadow look a bit unusual on a black girl); bubbly cheerleader ditz Ione (brought to life with verve by Spencer Locke), who seems culturally stuck in 1992 and is constantly mortified by the attempts of her mother Sloane to remain an eternal teenager; Elliott, a surly guy in a hoodie who has somehow been in detention for the last nineteen years; and a stuffed grizzly bear mascot who as a result of having been once kidnapped by a UFO unfolds into a time machine that will hold at least three students uncomfortably. The black humor starts with the massacre of BWOC self-described « bitch » and Hoobastank fan Taylor Fisher (played gleefully over the top by Alison Woods) by Cinderhella, a mad slasher who looks rather like a cross between Jason and Norman Bates’s mummified mom, and is rapid-fire and never ceasing (to the point where, as several reviewers commented, you have to go back and see it several times to catch everything). And the cultural references are so frequent that if you have a resident teenager, you may need to have him/her see it with you to sort it all out. A prom scene where Riley and Clapton (played by Executive Producer Josh Hutcherson), the guy she’s been pining for, become Prom King and Queen and lead off a dance to an up-tempo club mix of Hanson’s « MMBop » has to be seen to be believed. The one problem is that Director Joseph Kahn seems so focused on being clever and self-referential that he doesn’t leave quite enough time for character development – a scene where Riley and Clapton take a late-night ride down a deserted street on the same skateboard is one of the few quiet moments that allow us to concentrate on who they are. Two minor quibbles: 1) is there a high school anywhere in the U.S. where seniors don’t already have their own cars? Clapton goes everywhere by skateboard, Riley walks (or limps), Taylor and Ione are apparently driven to school by their moms – no self-respecting teenager I know would stand for it! 2) In spite of it being an R-rated movie, there’s no sex, no nudity (well, okay, there’s a brief glimpse of Caswell’s left breast, which she says in the commentary is not really her and was a « stunt boob »}, nobody is smoking pot, or even smoking cigarettes. Not that it’s a bad thing, but if these kids are 21st Century high-schoolers, they’re the cleanest-cut bunch you’ve ever seen! On the whole, however, this is the best comedy-teen slasher movie since « Student Bodies. » It’s a wild ride from start to finish that will leave you dizzy.

Review: Film giovanilistico come nello stile, piuttosto inventivo e creativo. Godibile

Review: A great blu-ray for what is a criminally under appreciated bit of chaotic film making. This film features … breaking the 4th wall, Dane Cook, A slasher plot, a time travelling bear, and a jock turning into a creature like the fly… ya. And somehow it maintains a level of rabid coherency. If you like those cult classics from the 80s and 90s this is for you. Strange. Crazy. And so much fun. The blu-ray looks great. Not a multitude of extras… but a couple.
