Charlie Chaplin: The Essanay Comedies (Blu-ray)
In 1914, the great Charlie Chaplin signed a one-year contract with the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company for what was then an unprecedented salary. Shooting in its California and Chicago studios, he went on to make 16 films that established him as the world’s favourite screen comedian.
Unlike other screen stars at the time, Chaplin retained complete creative control over his films, from writing to casting and directing. Despite the strain that put on his relationship with Essanay, this fruitful period of his career saw him evolve his style, resulting in seminal works such as (The Tramp, The Bank and The Champion.
The result of a 12 year project, led by Lobster Films and the Cineteca di Bologna, this comprehensive two-disc Blu-ray collection features 16 films, fully restored, presented alongside exclusive special features never before released in the UK.

Review: Die Restauratoren haben sensationelle Arbeit geleistet – durch Verwendung des besten erhaltenen Filmmaterials und dessen digitale Aufbereitung bekommt man die frühen Werke Chaplins erstmals in einer Form zu sehen, die eine Freude ist. Detailreich und angenehm für die Augen, ein Blick durch das Fenster der Geschichte. Da die verwendenen digitalen Algorithmen keinen direkten Einfluss durch temporale logische Bildanalyse genommen haben sind an die Datenrate hohe Ansprüche gestellt, die das verwendete Medium BluRay problemlos meistert. Keine medium-bedingten Artefakte, wie sie auf DVD definitiv auftreten würden (siehe die Keystone-Edition). Ich konnte zum ersten mal erahnen, wie Chaplins Filme damals beim Publikum ankamen – eine wahre Freude. Die bisherigen Editionen mit den unzählig kopierten Versionen, die nur aus starken, ausgewaschenen Kontrasten bestanden, werden, so sieht man jetzt sofort, Chaplins Kunst in keinster Weise gerecht. Wer Chaplin neu entdecken möchte – jetzt ist die Möglichkeit dazu!

Review: This product is an insight into Chaplin’s early work. Much of it is ongoing slapstick, probably hardly scripted. But it reveals the film industry in it’s infancy. More sophisticated work would be done by Chaplin and others soon after.

Review: These are far from Charlie’s best films, but the Tramp is still captivating even in shorts that are subpar. The quality of restoration here is superb, patchy but such is the nature of the subject matter. The music accompaniments are wonderful, and throughout these films you can get a great feel for Chaplin’s development as a filmmaker. It goes without saying that this is not the place to start with Chaplin, you should be watching the feature films first (any of the silents except A Woman of Paris) and then his later shorts at Mutual and First National, or perhaps his talkies (Limelight is a stunning film.) Overall though this is a fantastic collection, and as long as you know what to expect then I doubt you will be disappointed.
