Title: J’adore
Review: J »ai déjà vu ce film 3 fois, sans jamais m’en lasser. Ravie de l’avoir trouvé en dvd, je pourrai le revoir encore et encore. L’histoire de cette famille et de son héros Zac, est juste magnifique. Ce film est un bijou !Je suis fan absolue !

Review: Concernant la livraison : rien à redire. Concernant le film : je le conseille vivement à tous ! Belle histoire familiale où on pourrait se retrouver. Très, très émouvant ! Superbe jeux des acteurs ! Heureusement que, par moments, il y a un sous-titrage français, car le québécois est très imagé et pas forcément compréhensible pour nous aut’, les cousins français ! A noter que, parmi les bonus, il y a aussi un quizz de vocabulaire québecois ! Très drôle ! A recommander !

Title: Séjour dans une famille québécoise
Review: Très bon film québécois qui nous plonge dans l’univers d’une famille entre 1960 et 1980. En tant que fille de québécoise, j’ai particulièrement aimé retrouver les expressions et l’accent. Mais le scénario n’est pas en reste, ni l’interprétation. Le jeune Zac est particulièrement attachant, sa recherche d’identité étant au centre des réflexions. Sa famille est en fait comme toutes celles qu’on connaît, voire la sienne : chacune a son lot de problèmes, quels qu’ils soient.Les scènes sont diversifiées : ralentis, jeux de caméras… Et la bande son est également très bonne et importante : de Pink Floyd à Cure en passant par Charles Aznavour !Les expressions québécoises sont assez difficiles à comprendre, j’ai du m’avouer vaincue et mettre les sous-titres !C’est un film surtout très sincère, humain, portés par un ensemble d’acteurs excellents. Et c’est très drôle.Belle leçon de vie dans laquelle il faut apprendre à accepter les membres de sa famille comme ils sont, et qu’il vaut mieux savoir dire « je t’aime » avant qu’il ne soit trop tard…

Title: Une chronique familiale acide sous une enveloppe vintage
Review: Le cinéma d’auteur québécois se porte bien, depuis maintenant une dizaine d’année les Denys Arcand, Xavier Dolan, et Jean-Marc Vallee pour ne citer qu’eux ont apporté un vent de fraicheur à des sujets pourtant douloureux.Ce CRAZY de Jean-Marc Vallee en est un bon exemple : sous une forme de chronique vintage voire pop (la bande-son, excellente, y contribue) d’une famille dans les années 70 se glisse un portrait douloureux sur l’acceptation de l’homosexualité.Alors oui, les clichés sont parfois bien présents mais tout passe avec cette mise en scène rythmée et ce ton enlevé.Un film excellent à découvrir, même s’il faut parfois bien tendre l’oreille pour comprendre les subtilités de langage de nos cousins québécois.Seul bémol, l’édition DVD est très moyenne (bof bof les bonus) et l’édition 2 DVD comme Blu-Ray est difficile à trouver (et chère…).

Review: `Crazy’ is perhaps one of my most favourite French/Canadian films. It is also one of the few films that have ever moved me to the point of tears, and ironically so considering that this is neither the intention of the writer, nor the purpose of the scene to which I refer (you will know it when you see it). Having watched the film three times over the last few years, I remain convinced that it is one of the best written and directed films in gay and lesbian cinema, although it is meant for everyone.The story is in essence a monologue as the main character (Marc-Andre Grondin) takes rough his life, from birth to self discovery. Along the way the audience is introduced to a litany of characters, all of whom play an important and integral part in his life. In South Africa we say a person is a person, because of other people, and nothing is truer than in this case. His father is both atypical and likeable in many ways, and has an overwhelming affinity and affection for his sons (of which he has five). He is deeply affected by them all, and in his own way considers them as his personal pride and joy. I believe this is why he cannot come to terms with his one son’s homosexuality, and says as much in a revealing conversation with his son Zachary (Grondin). « One cannot abandon the idea of children, it is one of life’s most wonderful experiences », he says to his son. « If you insist on pursuing this choice, then I cannot accept that, ever! » Whilst intensely revealing of his inner thinking and desires for his boys, what these words reveal is a manifest ignorance of his son’s own turmoil and needs. He says the statement innocently enough, and I am sure he believes he is acting in his son’s best interests, and yet the destruction that results is both tragic and perverse. After all this is not his life to live, and how dare he impose his desires, needs and beliefs on others, without even the most casual respect for what life choices they may have ahead.His mother (Danielle Proulx) is perhaps one of the most interesting characters within the film, and her quiet presence is the undercurrent upon which the entire story depends. She is the family’s strength, and whilst she exists in the background, she is by no means insignificant. She is in fact the most inspiring of them all, and her inner strength is the very essence of all that is noble in women. She has a particular affinity with (), and her empathy for him is almost prophetic. She knows he faces one of life’s greatest challenges, and she prepares him in the best way she knows how. At times her desperation is almost palpable, and if she could change places and bare her son’s burden she would. Not that she loves him any more than she does her other sons, but it’s almost as if he is her closest affinity and is most like her. My own grandmother explained this to me once, when she said a mother loves all her children, but often there is one child who echoes her own soul, and provides her the peace she finds in best in herself. It is that child that she is closest to. She will not only feel their pain, she will experience it as if it was her own.The actors are sublime, as is the soundtrack which traverses Patsy Cline and David Bowie. In fact there is little more I can say about this film, without giving too much away. It’s an excellent production, well worth your time and emotional experience.

Review: I have watched this film three times now and I appreciate it more each time. I am disappointed that it did not receive more recognition from the critics. But then, it’s not the first great movie that slipped by under their radar.I think the actress who played the mother provided one of the best performances I have seen in years. In the scene following the funeral where son and father embrace in a desperate effort to recreate a damaged relationship, the mother’s reaction is one of the most touching moments I have ever seen on film. So simple, so understated, so moving.I think the father’s performance was outstanding also. The actor who played Zac would probably win the viewer’s poll as the best performance in the movie, and that choice would probably be pooh-poohed by those who consider themselves critics above the pack. But on reflection, I think he did a laudable job of holding his centerpiece performance in check. It would have been so easy to overdo it and lose the realism he achieved.Taken on the whole, every performance was so natural, so real, so convincing, that I find myself wondering how the surviving Beaulieus are doing today.None of those performances could have been realized without a screenplay and direction that resounds with truth.In another sense, this movie is like a painting. It is perfectly symmetrical. There is the forced march through the blizzard and the flight across the searing desert. There is the marijuana shotgun and the asthma inhaler. In every event in the film, there is balance not only of circumstance, but also of significance. The mystical elements of the healing powers and the religious faith are balanced by the gritty realism of the family conflicts and the post-pubertal priapism. What a powerful way to emphasize the symbolic as well as the real identities of the characters.The symbolism is as playful as it is serious. From the twin smokestacks to the use of the inhaler, the symbols appear exactly when and where they should.The soundtrack is very near perfect. I have heard it compared to the music from Trainspotting, but it really isn’t fair to compare the Trainspotting soundtrack to that of C.R.A.Z.Y. In the former case, the extraordinary soundtrack must not stray from the relatively direct path the film follows. In the latter, there is no direct path, rather a serendipitous wandering that imitates life. If C.R.A.Z.Y. were constructed like Trainspotting, then the casual viewer would remember only the Stones and Bowie and Floyd. But it isn’t. Therefore, the choices of Cline and Aznavour for natural and that ethereal Sheremetiev chant for supernatural are spot on. The L’Elisir d’Amore aria playing behind (and in front of) the drunken brawl at the family Christmas table was pure art. A choice every bit as superb as the choice of Lou Reed’s « Perfect Day » in Trainspotting.Turn off the phone and watch this film.

Review: This film is set in the 1970s in Québec, but it could have been set almost anywhere in the Western world. Struggles of adolescence and identity, alongside struggles of parents trying to cope with generational change. and parenthood of 5 brothers. Touching, funny, great sound track, very well done, rings true. Really terrific film.
