British Comedies of The 1930S Vol 11 Housemaster Me and My Pal [Edizione: Regno Unito] [Import]
DVD et Blu-ray > Films
The ebullient comedy films of the 1930s brought escape and laughter to millions of British cinemagoers, enabling veteran stars of the music-hall and theatre to reach out to a wider audience making household names of performers like Leslie Fuller, Hal Gordon, Bobby Howes, Ernest Lotinga and Gene Gerrard.
Although comedy would prove to be the decade’s most successful film genre, many of these classic early talkies have remained unseen since their original release. From boisterous knockabout humour to polished adaptations of popular stage farces, this ongoing collection showcases a wealth of rare features, each presented uncut, in a brand-new transfer from the best available elements in their as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

Review: The series entitled « British Comedies of the 1930s » currently (June 2017) runs to eleven discs each containing at least two titles. (We say two titles since some discs carry additional material.)As might be expected, there is considerable variation in terms of picture and sound quality but on the whole standards are good considering the age of the originals. Likewise the titles range from quaint slapstick via funny to a little outside mere comedy. For example, the final film on disc eleven (« Housemaster ») has its humorous moments but is in the main a serious and touching view of boys’ public school life in the early to mid-1950s.I started off with volume three and, finding this to my rather old-fashioned tastes, went on by degrees to complete the set. Duration for each film range between around sixty minutes to ninety minutes, giving good value for money in viewing time. Here you will find some of those actors who went on to become standard quality in so-called character actors (Cecil Parker et al) and others who went on to stardom (John Mills). The humour can run fast with many plays on words of varying subtlety that justifies a second or third viewing. Moreover, many of the films make their point without clumsy and inappropriate background audios, something that plagues most contemporary cinematography. The discs are packaged in the more recent slender cases, the entire set of eleven running to no more than 80mm of shelf space.

Review: Two very different films: one was largely knockabout slapstick, funny enough here and there; the more serious story about a public school teacher and his troubles was well produced and had a plot to be resolved. I wasn’t quite convinced by the girls from a French finishing school – their manners were lacking when they boisterously barged in on conversations.

Review: Housemaster shows various aspects of the old public school system with a popular housemaster. That system can also be seen in Another Country and in If before the fight back starts. Housemaster shows attitudes in society toward corporal punishment. Such a film is unlikely to be made today so it is a very rare representation of public school life of that period. In the UK today independent schools seem massively different and far better places.
