Review: Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos achieved a considerable reputation during his life as, primarily, a conductor associated with the Spanish repertoire. Enthusiastic and dedicated collectors will be very familiar with his discs of de Falla and the like, but may well be unaware of his grounding in the German symphonic tradition. They may well also be unaware of the duration of his professional connections with major American and Canadian orchestras – 35 years with the Philadelphia, 15 years or more with the Boston Symphony and 10 years with the National Symphony. For one so deeply embedded within the regular performing community it comes as a surprise to find him so scantily represented by recordings therefore. This lack, at a very late stage, has now been addressed by this superb and essential set from the Danish National S. O. who was astute enough to appoint him as chief conductor from 2012. Tragically, for both the players and audiences alike, his early retirement in 2014 as a result of poor health, was followed only a month later by his death. In these recordings from 2012 – 2014 however, there is not a trace of any lack of vitality. Indeed it is vitality and sheer joy that permeates this whole set.As the introductory notes from Kim Bohr, Chief Executive and Artistic Director makes clear, Fruhbeck brought ‘serenity, perspective and experience’ with him and ‘a very special , very affectionate relationship emerged between the chief conductor and his orchestra …. Through persistence, self-discipline and an amazingly focused work ethic, he succeeded in eliminating anything superfluous to allow the music to prevail and captivate ….. to the delight of music lovers and musicians across the globe.’ To this must be added that energy and joy – rarely has a camera team captured so much sustained shared joy in terms of smiles and body language from players throughout an orchestra. That love is a predominate contribution to the success of this set.Notes were made during assessing this set but soon the pencil was put aside as the review was merely becoming repetitive in terms of the previous paragraph. A brief summary is all that is required as this set is of such consistent high quality interpretively. As a watching and listening experience one is unusually drawn in to almost become one of the players themselves such is the level of communication. An unmissable clarity of conducting technique communicates immediately to the players at all times and this is accompanied by regular smiles of encouragement and shared approval. The Beethoven starts with amiable and genial approaches to the first two symphonies but drama is immediately apparent at the onset of the Eroica. The fourth is more powerful than is often the case, the fifth has bite a real sense of new discovery while the sixth delivers a pastoral scene of substance. The eighth is also bigger and sharper defined with no idea of this being the composer’s ‘little’ symphony as it was once referred to. The ninth has gripping intensity that surely matches Beethoven’s vision and the seventh is the most exciting imaginable experience with no holds barred from the whooping horns and incisive trumpets. Throughout this set Fruhbeck delivers pulse and pace that are worlds apart from either the Thielemann or Jansons sets. The nearest is Abbado’s who also delivers a fresh and incisive set of interpretations without deviation but in significantly less modern sound and vision. So much for the Beethoven: The same story continues with the additional pieces. These are a performance of the Rodrigo Aranjuez concerto played by that famous exponent of many performances and recordings, Pepe Romero, and like flesh and blood to a Spaniard like Fruhbeck. That is followed by a Berlioz that comes as a startling sonic development being written only 3 years after Beethoven’s death. This performance includes the optional extra cornet part in the Waltz and arguably one of the most exciting final movements ever recorded. By the end this is not such an outlandish comment as one might imagine. That leaves the Alpine Symphony that stands up easily against the might of Karajan and the BPO on CD or Thielemann with the VPO on BD / DVD.The BD audio-visual presentation is outstanding and fully captures all of the events – and events they are! Only the Alpine Symphony visuals are in SD but this has been up-scaled in the software to HD. The sound is in genuine DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 or 5.0 throughout – and the visual quality of the Alpine Symphony proves to be practically identical to the other recordings in the set when played back on 4K TV even when viewed at close range. The notes are thorough and interesting in many languages. There are no subtitles for the Beethoven Choral. The shape of the set may cause shelving issues but they will be worth them. One must now hope that there have been more recordings made of Fruhbeck and his Danish orchestra during these final two years. What a treasure trove they might turn out to be. In the meantime this set must stand as a treasurable and memorable tribute to sustained inspiration and performance – a collector’s item indeed..

Review: This is a complete set of Beethoven symphonies, along with Rodrigo’s Guitar Concerto (w/Pepe Romero), Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique and Strauss’s Alpensinfonie- all on three blu-ray discs. Last night I watched the Eroica symphony and was very happy I got this set. Even at full price, this is a bargain.I’m not that familiar with Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, but based on this performance, I’m going to check into him more now. His style reminds me of Giulini… beautiful phrasing and expressive dynamics, flowing tempi that never feel rushed, and not a lot of sharp rhythmic accents. (Basically the other side of the coin from Toscanini.) de Burgos is very old and sits as he conducts, but he is sharp as a tack, with complete control over his band. It’s interesting to see him sculpt the dynamic swells and rubato with his hands. He was obviously very pleased with the results at the end.The orchestra is first rate with a remarkable diversity of age and genders. There’s an oboist who is very good, but really emotes as he plays, much to the amusement of the flautist who sits next to him. One of the basses looks like it’s been through the wars, covered with battle scars and obviously much loved. Visually, between the interesting orchestra and de Burgos’s animated and precise conducting, there’s a lot to look at. Not boring like other classical music blu-rays I’ve seen. The sound is warm and full. The soundstage is forward and natural sounding, with a very realistic balance… no spotlighting of solo parts in the mix at all. The focus is on the overall sound, not the details, so it really feels like being in a concert hall. The rear ambience gives a nice feeling of space. Overall exactly what I look for in a 5.1 mix of symphonic music. The packaging is very odd, with hinged envelopes for the discs and a book bound into the cardboard box. I’ll probably transfer it to a standard blu-ray case at some point. But the book is very nice.

Review: If you are a fan of the Beethoven Symphonies, you could not do much better than this wonderful set by Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. I took a chance on this set because I had never heard this orchestra. In a word, they are wonderful. Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, of course, was a world renowned Conductor. Audio and Video are exemplary. The box set is compact and beautifully designed. Everything about this set is first class. As a bonus, you also get recordings of Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz, Richard Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie and Joaquin Rodrigos popular Concierto de Aranjuez. Pepe Romero makes a guest appearance on the latter. The music is presented in either PCM Stereo or DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. This is a set I will revisit many times.
