Review: Voici un pur joyau d’horreur psychologique qui transcende les conventions du septième art.Sous-estimé lors de sa sortie dans les salles de cinéma, Angel Heart nous offre pourtant un composé unique, une descente vertigineuse dans les basses régions de l’inconscient qui va peu à peu virer au cauchemar métaphysique.Serti dans un alliage peu commun d’intrigue policière et d’épouvante, le film d’Alan Parker relate d’abord un destin d’une cruauté inouïe.Ce chef-d’œuvre ne serait certainement pas ce qu’il est sans une remarquable pléiade d’acteurs, à commencer par Mickey Rourke en détective frénétique et perdu dans les méandres d’une enquête qui le dépasse, et Robert de Niro, campé sans conteste dans le rôle le plus terrifiant de sa carrière.Profondément sombre et pessimiste, Angel Heart nous promène dans les décors glauques d’une Amérique en proie à tous les délires et à tous les malaises, où prédominent la déglingue et la violence, au gré des errances d’un enquêteur dont les investigations semblent s’enliser dans une éternité désespérante.Quel sera l’aboutissement de ses recherches ? Quelle signification revêtent les réminiscences et les flashs-backs qui jalonnent les pérégrinations d’Harry Angel ?Ce qui fait la force de ce long-métrage, ce n’est pas seulement qu’il obéit à une gradation impitoyable dans le mal, c’est surtout que l’horreur y est suggérée plutôt qu’explicitement montrée. Et c’est là que le film prend toute sa dimension : celle d’une longue déchéance qui donne libre cours à notre imagination.Toute l’histoire baigne dans une fatalité insoutenable constellée de meurtres, de rites vaudous, de symboles d’animaux, le tout dans une atmosphère suprêmement poisseuse et maladive; c’est une effroyable catabase rythmée par les accents déchirants du saxophone de Courtney Pine et la musique fatidique et dantesque de Trevor Jones, lesquels pénètrent jusqu’à la moelle épinière.La récurrence de scènes nocturnes, agissant comme des leitmotivs, les contrastes clair-obscur qui marquent la photographie du film, les échos informes et désespérés qui résonnent dans le vide, accentuent l’angoisse qui imprègne toute l’œuvre.Si ce récit donne autant la chair de poule, c’est qu’il remet en question les fondements mêmes de notre existence : sommes-nous réellement des êtres de raison libres de décider de notre destin, ou les jouets aveugles de forces qui dépassent les limites de notre étroite intelligence et auxquelles nous sommes prédestinés ? Title: Sombre et fascinant
Review: Angel Heart (1987) est l’un des « films cultes » de ma jeunesse. On part sur des bases classiques du film noir : un privé de 2nd ordre doit enquêter sur un crooner disparu à son retour de la guerre. Son client est assez mystique, et plus on avance plus on sent qu’il y a de la sorcellerie dans toute cette histoire. La tension se fait de plus en plus plus forte au fur et à mesure que les cadavres s’accumulent…Le point (très) fort de cette oeuvre, c’est son ambiance lourde, chaude et poisseuse. Il y a un côté « film d’époque » aussi, avec un Harlem et une Nouvelle Orléans des années 50 bien restitués à mon avis. Les acteurs sont très bons aussi, surtout Mickey Rourke (du temps où on lui voyait un avenir brillant) et la jeune Lisa Bonnet (waouw !).Concernant le Blu Ray en lui même, je dirai qu’il ne fait pas mieux qu’un DVD bien upscallé. Le travail de restauration en HD est correct, mais on a vu mieux (certains passages restent granuleux). Les bonus sont d’un intérêt moyen, même pour les fans.Note : si vous n’avez jamais vu le film, le lisez pas le résumé derrière la boîte. Il en dit un peu trop, et pourrait vous gâcher la surprise finale.

Title: Chef-d’oeuvre
Review: Harry Angel est un privé engagé par un bien étrange Louis Cyphre. Pas vraiment habitué à ce type de boulot puisqu’il se contente d’affaires miteuses mais rapides, il accepte tout de même de retrouver un homme disparu après la guerre.Une histoire de privé confronté à des phénomènes occultes n’est pas une idée originale en soi. En effet, nombre de nouvelles et de livres sont consacrés à ce thème. Le cinéma ou la télévision n’avaient pas non plus hésité à s’emparer de la chose. La véritable originalité de ANGEL HEART se situe du côté du déroulement de l’enquête qui fait le jour sur une conclusion pour le moins inattendue. Ici, le diable tire les ficelles avec une classe assez déroutante. Un diable tiré à quatre épingles et qui semble bien respectueux des bonnes manières. Derrière ce masque, se cache un personnage avec qui il est préférable de régler ses dettes a moins d’accepter qu’il ne joue avec vous, et ce, à vos dépens. C’est exactement ce qui arrive à Johnny Favourite. Crooner des années 40 qui s’est intéressé au vaudou pour s’assurer une belle carrière. Aux basques de ce chanteur insaisissable, Harry entreprend alors une descente aux enfers, symbolisée par l’image récurrente d’un monte-charge, au fur et à mesure qu’il fait la lumière sur le disparu qu’il est supposé retrouver.Mickey Rourke, parfait dans ce film noir, nous fait regretter son absence des plateaux, ANGEL HEART fait partie de ses meilleures performances et le revoir fait penser à tous ces acteurs en qui on plaçait de grands espoirs et qui ont fini rapidement dans des séries B ou Z.De son côté, Robert De Niro est magistral, étonnant par la sobriété qu’il apporte au personnage du diable qu’il incarne ici, loin des grand-guignols de rigueur. Au contraire, de son calme, de ses sous-entendus ou de ses gestes raffinés naît une impression de grandeur.

Review: The 1987 film « Angel Heart » should be considered, fundamentally, a mystery. Its a mystery in the sense of what the ancient Rosicrucians and other such mystical societies meant by that term: a spiritual truth made known to man by divine revelation. Harry Angel, a private investigator, is searching for Johnny Favorite. According to the Christian myth, Lucifer was God’s favorite angel until he was replaced by the heavenly father’s human creation (and we humans have been caught in this jealous struggle ever since). Even Johnny Favorite’s original name was Liebling (German for « dearest or most precious »). Many religions and mystics speak of humans as half animal and half divine – that would make us all, in a way, « hairy angels ». In the film the heart represents the center of the self, the divine aspect – and it was the heart that the infernal Johnny Favorite tore out of Harry Angel to take the innocent’s place in the world and submerge his baser identity. « Angel Heart » is about the search for lost identity (the original case of identity theft, I suppose – in a metaphysical sense). Are we also, to one degree or another, private investigators of the soul, searching for our lost selves? This movie is filled with this kind of religious symbolism and Jungian archetypes. In a way it asks what came first, the chicken or the egg? Was it the creator or its creation? There’s the character, Dr. Fowler (the drug addicted physician) – even his name is symbolic (« a handler of fowl ») juxtaposed to the voodoo rites involving the handling and sacrifice of chickens in spiritual rituals. I see the chickens in « Angel Heart » as representative of the life force (the carrier of the egg, or « the Soul », afterall). Fowler is a man of science which, in many ways, is our modern world’s new priesthood of materialism. Science’s relationship with the life force has, of course, been quite self-destructive – besides the great comforts and breakthroughs in knowledge its created it has also brought about nuclear weapons and other meltdowns of the natural world. In addition, western man has become addicted to technology and increasingly under « the spell » of materialism. Beyond the layer involving the christian myth – Lucifer and the fall of humanity – the film also has the greater Jungian perspective that takes in all religious myth along with individual dreams. Carl Jung’s central idea is what he calls the « process of individuation », which is what he feels leads to consciousness, to completeness (like a flower opening to sunlight). This involves confronting ones « shadow », which is basically the unconscious, negative part of ones psyche (the image in the mirror to painful to ponder). In the context of the film, the black race, as portrayed in Harlem and New Orleans, is shown as a societal projection of « the shadow » – one that white-western man has demonized as something to be kept apart and to be feared. Harry Angel’s intrusion into this world is seen as something taboo and dangerous for he’s venturing into an area thats « for colored patrons only », one in which the white man is not suppose to participate. This confrontation with the dark-side, « the shadow », contains the truth of who one really is as an individual, which is beyond good and evil and the world of duality – of heaven and hell. Jung speaks of « the anima » which in the case of the male is the totality of the unconscious feminine psychological qualities that he possesses. The anima (or dream-girl) is an archeptype of the collective unconscious (which all individual psyches emerge from) and it will manifest itself in life and by appearing as figures in dreams (I hear Rourke whistling « Girl Of My Dreams » in the background). Jung wrote that confronting ones « shadow » is an apprentice-piece, while confronting ones « anima » is the master-piece. The character Epiphany is a pure anima figure. The word epiphany also has the definition, among others, as « a manifestation of deitys on earth such as angels appearing to mortals ». Harry Angel is drawn to her in his search, spiritually and erotically, because he seeks to be re-united with the unconscious aspect of his true identity – the one that was there before the original fall, before he hid himself behind a mask (what Jung refers to as « the persona »- the front that one presents to the world). But first Harry needs to confront the shadow-side, make the blood sacfrifice and make his hellish descent. This has to happen before he can ever be redeemed and experience grace – he will have to do his time in Hell. This is like Dante wandering through Hades before he can find his feminine ideal, Beatrice ( another classic anima, « Girl Of My Dreams » figure). The vicious attack dog that chases Angel is a contemporary hellhound which in myths are often depicted as chasing a lost soul – « There’s A Hellhound On My Trail », to quote the great bluesman Robert Johnson. One could also say, « A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall » (to quote Bob Dylan) in discussing another reoccuring image in the film. The rain can be seen as a cleansing of the soul, a purification, which first must come with judgement and personally being held accountable for who and what one REALLY is. After that its possible to be resurrected, to be whole – the final flowering of the individuation process. Its not by coincidence that Lucifer the Angel in ancient texts has been referred to as « the bringer of light » (the latin translation of the name) since its his intervention that forces the hero to confront his real self. Its funny that I’ve seen people refer to this film as a simple story – I guess they also consider the bible simple, too.In some ways the most fascinating level going on in « Angel Heart » is that Mickey Rourke seems to have been acting out the mythic story in his « real » life. The film is filled with parallels with « the actor’s » own development – selling ones soul for stardom, losing the bargain, undergoing facial re-construction, etc….This isn’t just being a great poetic actor (as Sean Penn has referred to him) – its being an iconic actor . . . and « Angel Heart » is an iconic film.

Review: People will likely fall into one of two categories of viewer. There will be those who first saw this film on general release some 24 years ago and fell in love with its originality, good acting and wonderful cinematography and there will be those like me who will be viewing the film for the first time. If you are in the latter category I promise not to give any of plot away. I think that it would be a real spoiler to come to this film the first time with any idea of the storyline. While there may be some clever souls who will guess the ending before it unfolds I will be quite happy to admit that it came to me as a complete surprise.Irrespective of the clever plot and good acting I was completely blown away by the wonderful cinematography. And the picture quality on Blu-ray is absolutely outstanding. The inky detail of the blacks is simply stunning. There are quite a few dark scenes in this movie and the picture quality is every bit as good as the more recent movie, `Dark City’. Furthermore, on Angel Heart the choice of the locations is impressive and the film captures perfectly the atmosphere of mid 50’s America.In my opinion this is very much a film which you will be able to enjoy on repeated viewings, to savour the art of the cinematographer as well as to get a better understanding of the complexity of the plot. Yes, there are several murders and quite a lot of blood but I think you will be doing yourself a disservice if you choose not to buy for that reason. To a great extent the violence is retrospective and not in the same stomach wrenching category of `Saving Private Ryan’.There are 2 choices of soundtrack, Dolby Stereo and an excellent DTS 5:1 mix. There is also a very good picture in picture menu system for chapter navigation – the film being divided into just 12 chapters. I have nothing but praise for the technical re-mastering of this film. I know that a few people have criticised the quality of the Blu-ray restoration. I can only assume that there must be something wrong with their equipment. Both the video and audio quality is simply amazing. Highly recommended!
